Help Questioning an update

I just activated a SPH-L720T having Android 4.3 with Sprint (USA). I have a notification saying System update downloaded, touch to install.

Upgrading my Galaxy S2 from GB to ICS caused me no end of trouble. I tried to downgrade back to GB but it failed. I tried several times to upgrade it to JB but it failed every time. I tried rooting and that failed too.

Now that I finally have a new phone, I don't want an update to give me another 2 years of misery just for installing it.

Does anybody know what this system update is and if it's a big risk to install?

The way I do it is "is the phone working? If yes, does it have any bugs? If no, no update." I'm on 4.3 (on a different phone) and have the updater frozen.

I wouldn't bother. Had no end of issues with 4.4 on my s4 ... laggey, crashes, keeps hunting, and opening the front cover now no longer seems to activate the phone. Wishing I hadn't updated
