Root Questions about problems with root

Hey i have a droid x rooted and my brother had evo 4g. I am about to root his phone and maybe install a rom. I was just wondering befor i do this how easy it is to fix a problem if it happens. With my phone i thought i bricked it and had to sbf it back to normal. I was just wondering if there a way to sbf this phone back to like new in the box like on the dx. Also how easy is it to do and have you heard of someone truly bricking there evo? I know you guys on this forum are awesome and very helpful so thank you in advance for any help you give.

I honestly don't know what SBF is. And I have not heard of a total brick.. Some have been stubborn to come back to life but it always seems they(the owner and the helpers on this forum) get them back up and running. Follow the rooting for dummies thread stickied at the top of this page and go for it. If you run into any problems, the people on here will do their best to get you out of it. Chances are, regardless of all of the panic threads on here, it will go smoothly. GO FOR IT!!!

I think a SBF is like a RUU for the Droid. I'm not specifically familiar with the details. I will say this, though, it's not terribly hard to fix *most* issues. If you can get to hboot (the bootloader), you don't have a brick. We use PC36IMG.zip files to fix almost anything at that point. They're basically just files that can be flashed from hboot. When the contents of the file is the same as the contents of a RUU, it will take the phone to stock. I'm thinking that's similar to SBF, but I haven't looked into it much.

One very important thing, though - The Evo recently got a new OTA. If you're not starting off with that OTA (sw version 3.70, hboot 2.10), you will need to update radios to flash any ROM based on this new OTA. If you're starting with it, then no worries; just flash a ROM based on 3.70. That being said, those who don't flash radios properly (pull the battery in the middle of the update, for example) can actually brick the phone. That is hard if not impossible to recover from. If you have any question, of course feel free to ask.

Thanks guys for the reassurance. Sbf is a file that resets your phone back to stock wiped clean i guess it is only for droids but i dont know much about computers or phones. I am however good at following instructions. I will follow the stickys word for word so i probably will not need to fix it. One more question. If i root it is there an easy way to bring it back so it looks like it was never rooted? He is affraid of messing up his phone and not being able to send it in for warrenty. Thanks again guys.

The same "Rooting for Dummies" thread that you need to follow to root the phone also contains steps for unrooting your phone. Good luck and be sure to give Matlock a "thanks" for the awesome thread.
