Root Questions about removing APKs

New to the details of Linux/Android OS so bear with me. I recently got rooted GB running on my DX and want to remove the bloat now, but I want to be sure I can easily put everything back if necessary.

From my research, I think the way I want to do it is by renaming the APKs to .bak - is it that simple? For example if I want to remove Google Talk, just rename talk.apk to talk.bak? So I could just use a file app like ES file explorer or root explorer? Then to revert, just rename it to the original extension?

My other question is if I rename for example talk.apk, that's all it takes to completely get rid of google talk? Just that one file and it's gone? Is this normal for any app? That idea seems right to me, but so foreign because I'm used to Windows where a program has so many intertwined components it's ridiculous.

To me it's easier to create a new directory and move the files instead of renaming them.

Moving them can be done in one step vs renaming each file.

That's about it. The easier method is to use Titanium Backup to freeze the apps. That way there is less chance of a mistake. Apps stay intact but do not run.
