Root Questions about Titanium Backup

SO i have used backup / restore with Rom Manager and have had mixed results. Onr of my backups i thought was clean wasnt, it turned out to be worthless WHILE one of my earlier backups was spot on. The one that turned out to be worthless didnt wipe a launcher program that gave me constant force closes after i restored. WHILE my earliest restore file did wipe the launcher program.

But what iam looking for is something that will do a backup and restore exactly as the phone was configured when i did the backup.

SO i am trying Titanium Backup. I did a batch backup of system & data files
and also created the recovery zip that i guess is the front end for T B. that is used to restore the backup.

My question is if i load the craziest rom combos and something goes wrong, will Titanium Backup save my azz 100% once i have restored from my backup file ??? Is it powerful enough to restore the phone back 100??

THANKS FOR THE HELP AS ALWAYS !!!!!!!!!

I don't use Titanium Backup, but I've seen a lot of positive remarks about it around the rooting forums here, zb.

Here are the free and paid feature lists for T.B.:

Free -

  • No time limit
  • Very fast app listing (~1 second for 300 apps)
  • Sort apps by name / last backup / backup frequency
  • Filter apps by name / type / status / Apps Organizer labels (also affects Batch operations)
  • Backup/restore regular apps + their settings
  • Backup/restore protected apps + their settings
  • Backup/restore system settings (incl. Wi-Fi AP list)
  • Restores the Market links when restoring apps
  • Zero-click background batch backup
  • Interactive batch restore
  • Many batch scenarios (eg: if more than N days since last backup, etc)
  • Zero-click app un-installer
  • Zero-click system app un-installer
  • Desktop widgets
  • A single weekly or biweekly scheduled backup
  • User-defined apps lists with filtering, coloring and scheduling support

Pro/Paid -

  • Multiple backups per app (history length can be chosen)
  • Zero-click background batch restore
  • Encryption of your backups (asymmetric crypto: the passphrase is needed on restore only)
  • Batch verification of all backups
  • Ultra fast HyperShell (much faster for almost everything)
  • Market Doctor can remake any broken Market links (only for apps that were backed up with the link in place)
  • App freezer can disable an app (and make it invisible) without un-installing it
  • Batch app freezing/defrosting
  • Unlimited, independent scheduled backups (each of which can run 1 to 7 times a week)
  • Dalvik cache cleaner can free up precious internal memory
  • Integrate updated system apps directly into your ROM to free up even more internal memory
  • Synchronize all (or some of) your backups to Dropbox
  • Retrieve all your backups from Dropbox (in case of lost phone or SD card failure)
  • Branding to your name (Donate version only)

About the remnants of a FC launcher being imported and restored, that sounds like one messy nightmare, being as how backup and restore is supposed to be what keeps us going if we've borked something in our setup, etc.

I'm wondering if you do a manual cache wipe, Dalvik, etc, prior to restoring.

titanium is very good at restoring you apps and app data.....do not restore system data however, as this can cause problems and fc issues

Ah-ha. ;)

I've been thinking that the nand backup I used in Eris, and ClockworkMod now, have never been other than 100% reliable.

I tend to backup after any major (and some minor, like a new app, etc) change in a ROM. I'll then toss the second latest backup.

App preservation is something else.. I just rely on Market "my downloads" and go through the list with each ROM installation if I have to. No big deal, and it helps me make decisions as to how I want a particular ROM configured (why have them all the same? might as well just keep the same ROM in all the time ;)).

my angry birds scores and baseball superstars/asphalt 5 progress must be preserved at all costs  so im a big titanium fan.

also i have so many sideloaded (ugh that is a very att captivate term but it applies i suppose) apps that are all over my sdcard that its easier to just batch restore them than try and locate them again....same with the free market apps

granted a lot of this is due to my constant data wipes when flashing roms...but still :o

Heh.. upload, download.. sideload.. I guess we've been sideloading ringtones for quite some time, before Android even. ;) All that time I thought I was downloading them into my phone from my computer. lol ..

Good point about the game scores. I have started over Meteor Deluxe innumerable times now. :D

well, i found out the answer to my question yesterday. i was trying to get the battery circle mod and caused my phone to go into a boot loop. Titanium backup only works on a functioning phone. I ended up having to use a restore file from CWM recovery to restore phone functionality, then use Titanium to restore apps & data.

SO to save my azz, CWM restore is the way to go for me. Hope this helped someone!

Deleted the last post. The above post containing the link is actually relevant to this thread and I don't think it was meant to be taken personal ;)

Having started playing with ROMs lately, I had a similar question. What should I be backing up so that I don't have to go through the complete setup process re-adding my three e-mail accounts, etc) everytime I flash a ROM onto the device?

Zaphod -

could you share the batch you used?

Thx

Use Titanium Backup to backup apps and app data. It will save all info for that app ie: your email address and passwords. Just don't back up system data as it may have conflicts with any new roms you install.

Sounds like it worked just fine. Its your backup that has the bad app and one backup that didn't have it. It isn't "wiping" anything it simply isn't there in one backup. Well that's my guess anyways

Titanium is the "go to" backup app for what you want but the new MyBackUp Root is free and also does a good job. The newer version is much faster (doesn't use that slow ass zip format, Mybackup Pro has also been updated) and I've been using it lately with good result.

Hrmm....unfortunately, I don't see a Batch option for Apps and app data....closest is user apps and system data?

Just click run backup all apps....it automatically does app data with it....when you restore then you select restore apps with data

Where are the things like contacts, text messages and things like that stored?

Your contacts are linked to your gmail so no need to back them up unless you saved them to the phone. If that is the case I only know of one way to back them up and it involves a computer and MS Outlook. For texts I use a program call SMS Backup and Restore to back them up.

You can backup your contacts to the sdcard...,go into contacts...and look for export/import....export them in vcf format then import them after a data wipe....i forget where it is...check under settings or more....im on aosp atm so i don't have the.samsung contacts to see exactly where

I got it:

Open contacts>settings>more>Export/Import

Also thanks for that bit of info
