Root Questions about using custom sounds

So I installed some Doctor Who and Portal sounds. Setting the ringtone seems to work just fine.

But when I hold the button over a sound and instruct it to be a 'notification' sound, then I go to settings and check, the sound is not there and it's not working.

Also, is there no way to customize the sounds for unlock screen, and the 'screen unlock' and 'audible selection' sounds?

Notification sounds are in the .ogg format.
Convert the mp3 files you want to use to the ogg format.
Online Audio Converter (MP3, WAV, Ogg, WMA, M4A, AAC) – media.io is a free online converter.
Then place them in the system/media/audio/notifications folder and they should be available for you to use.

Screen unlock and lock sounds are also in the .ogg format and are located in the system/media/audio/ui folder.

Notifications do not need to be .ogg, any supported audio format is fine at least in my experience. Location is all that's important as android supports them in specific external locations (in case you're not rooted). The following folders are created in the root of your SD Card.

SD Card Folder Structure
Alarms/ - Media scanner classifies all media found here as an alarm sound.
Download/ - Miscellaneous downloads.
Movies/ - All movies (excluding those taken with the camcorder).
Music/ - Media scanner classifies all media found here as user music.
Notifications/ - Media scanner classifies all media found here as a notification sound.
Podcasts/ - Media scanner classifies all media found here as a podcast.
Pictures/ - All photos (excluding those taken with the camera).
Ringtones/ - Media scanner classifies all media found here as a ringtone.
