Root questions before i root

starflyr

Newbie
so i finally decided to root after trying to figure out what the hell is going on with this rooting. ive had the phone since november, so you can tell i am clueless!!

this is the file i was going to use:
Super Clean version 2.9.2 - EB01/EC10 Froyo leak root+Froyo Clockworkmodwith MALWARE protection

had a few questions, sorry if they are basic.

first do i need to wipe? if so what program do i use?

is there a program to use to back up? my contacts are saved with verizon, is that kosher? what about my pix and vids? and i guess i loose all my apps? anyway to save apps?

so i tryed to download odin and norton thought it was a threat!? do i have to disable my firewall?

i guess thats it for now! thanks ahead of time for anyone who took the time to read all of this. oh yeah that package eliminates bloatware, si?

sorry for terminology errors

laterz

sorry mods, should this have been in "all things root" ?

if so can you please move? i appreciate it, thanks again!!

If you use the package, no it'll wipe for you.

Just download titanium backup if you want your apps backed up. Also make sure your contacts are synced with Google. Your pics and vids should be on your sd card and won't be bothered with.

Seems like you have to :P

You know how in Terminator 3, they say "Skynet IS the virus!"

Well, Norton is the virus. What a system-killer. Please uninstall it immediately and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials (free!).

i tried titanium back up and it requires root access. is there anything i can use to back up apps prior to rooting?

ok i really wana root, but i am not computer savy, savy?

so i uninstalled norton and downloaded the microsoft security program
s44 recommended (thanks dude). after that i installed odin without a problem.

so the first line in the guide says:

First you will need to download and place on your sd card update.zip, download here Update.zip

i downloaded the udate.zip file, but i have a question. i unzip this file, yes? i installed winrar to unzip the update. after unzipping where on the sd card do i put the file?

sorry so many questions i just wana be sure before i proceed.

thank you in advance for any advice!!

laterz!!

Do not unzip... It just said "place the file on your sd card" It said nothing about unzipping...

Greetings starflyr,

You aren't ready to root. I don't say this to be mean or sound elitist. You are having questions and issues with the most basic things of the rooting process. Take that and you own admittance of non computer savy, and you are most likely heading for a disaster.

Take a look at the all things root section at the top of this forum. There is a cavalcade of knowledge for you there. It will give you some answers and insight.

Again, I don't want to sound like a f'n jerk, I'm trying to save you some unnecessary head aches.

Read up some more.

i take your advice very seriously! some of the questions i posed i answered myself by going back over the instructions again. for example the wipe question and others.

i was not ready when i started this thread, thus the reason for said thread. i do feel more confidant now; am i ready? well i have not proceeded yet.

i asked very basic questions so i would not make errors.

i feel i understand and can follow the steps listed without incident. should i proceed? i guess thats something i have to decide!!

one more question, if i do not unzip the file going on my sd card, why is winrar necessary? nothing else is zipped? am i missing something?

i mean i put the update on my sd card, then i download the drivers.

open odin, plug in the phone, do the volume dance. click the pda button in odin, choose the flavor of froyo file i already downloaded, then click start. let odin perform its magic then voil

If you use the all-in-one file through Odin, know that it will erase everything on your phone. Without having clock work recovery installed first, there is no way to backup your phone. You can save a copy of your contacts to the SD card though.

The samsung drivers are needed to get your computer to recognize your phone. That's also needed for Odin to connect to your phone.

As you become more familiar with the setup, you will see that most of the mods such as Themes and others, are saved with the .zip extension. These are not meant to be extracted.

The all-in-one package will install CWR (clock work recovery) on your phone. It will replace your standard recovery. The .zip files are executed through an option in CWR.

I'm not sure which link you were following to get 2.9.2. Here is an link to the file from the guy who created it.

[ROM][3.23.2011] Superclean 2.9.2 EA15/EB01/EB16/EC10 Based - xda-developers

Good luck!

Security Essentials will detect most root apk files and apps as Unix lootor exploit and clean the files. Make sure to exclude directories on your computer where you are keeping exploit files.

Yea removing norton will probably double your pc speed

so this will effect the files used to root? so, do I need to put those files where ms security won't touch them? or can I do the one touch root w/o worrying about security?

thanks again
