Root Questions ... Lots

Vulcan

Hey, i need help with rooting my Htc Evo 4G
I am horrid at this.
Android version:
2.2
Kernel version:
2.6.32-ge2fb08e
Build number:
3.29.651
Software number:
3.29.651.5

Yeah, i have been reading that , and a few others. But , what i meant to ask is how you/other people rooted their Evo's.

Oh yeah. I basically did that guide. I didn't know about the forum then but I used unrevoked 3. Lots of people use that guide successfully. It wont steer you wrong and if you have an issue we are here. This is a great forum. I'm a member of xda also but that forum isn't the most helpful to noobs. Its more for the devs.

@ Vulcan, I used the unrevoked 3 method and it seemed to work well. I ended up having to do it a couple of times myself to get it to work. But work it did. the dummies guide is pretty good. You'll go all over looking for instructions or videos on how to do it. The dummy guide seems to be the most comprehensive, most of the guys in the videos are nice enough to leave at least one thing out lol... usually it's something little and stupid but if you don't do it the the procedure wont work or work well. Just make sure you follow the directions. The main guys on that thread do a good job of keeping the guide up to date.

You can't go wrong with the Rooting for Dummies guide. Unrevoked is simple and easy to use. I have rooted 5 Evos so far without a hitch. Reading the posts here might scare you a bit but there are many more success stories that don't get posted. Read the guide then re-read it. Any questions, ask away.

From the info you posted, if you root and decide to flash roms you will likely have to update your radios. Not sure yet as you didn't include your baseband but the build number is older.

Ok. I have super-user access, and i am going to flash a custom rom , i am going to try cyanogen mod 7 .

Understand that CM7 is an AOSP rom(not a Sense rom) and is still a beta release. There are still nightly improvements and somethings like 4g and Hmdi might not work as yet. I believe CM6.1.2 is the latest stable release and you might consider that. As always though, make sure you make a nandroid backup before flashing.

Ok,Thank you and am i nand unlocked? I am just getting used to android , and i am 14 so i need to learn alot more.

If you have s-off then you are nand unlocked. You should be good to go. Just make sure to make a backup before any changes......did I tell you to make sure to make a backup? :D

The best thing you can do is read and learn to understand what you are doing. If you get into trouble, it will help you get out of it.

Power off, then hold down the down volume button and power at the same time til it boots to a white screen. At the top is will say s-on or s-off. S-off means you have nand unlocked. This is the boot loader or hboot screen. It gives you other info as well like your radio(baseband) version and your hboot version which would be necessary info if you had to unroot.
