Help Questions regarding data charges.

I just upgraded to the optimus one on friday and already have racked up $30 in data charges. I researched and found that you can disable the internet via ApnDroid app which I did. My question however is why do services like google maps still work when the browser's, marketplace etc do not? Does google maps use data usage and if so why is it still active and potentially charging me if I disabled all internet usage on my phone? I just want to ensure I know what I am being charged for. If anyone could provide insight it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Settings\Wireless and Networks\Mobile Networks
Data enabled -deselect

This will stop any and all data usage over the mobile network. You can only access the internet/web/email/twitter/facebook when you are connected to wifi.
