Help Quick qeustion about new phone

Newbie
Long story short my Droid X got messed up and I'm buying another from a person on craigslist.

Will I have to go to a Verizon store to switch anything to the new phone or can I just "log in" the new phone with my gmail and have it work? I'm guessing I'll have to go to Verizon and have them put the info from my broke (works but screen is dim) phone on the new one to keep my current number right? Also how can I test to see if the ENS is clean? Should I just try to meet him at a Verizon? Thanks guys

You could do the phone switching online and your contacts would sync with gmail. To check the ESN however, I do not know. It probably would be best to meet at Verizon that way everything could be done in person while knowing everything works.

Ask the person to meet you at a Verizon Corporate Store. If they are a good seller, they should have no problem meeting you there. Then just let the Verizon rep take your old DX off the account and add the new DX (via ESN#s).

Then you just log into the new DX using your existing gmail account.
You may need/want to do a Factory Data Reset to remove any installed apps/games and set the phone back to factory settings before you log in for the first time. A factory reset will not delete any files off the SD card though. You will want to format the card before using it. If the seller is smart, he will have done all this before meeting you.

The gmail account just restores you Google contacts, and remembers which Apps/Games you have paid for. It will NOT install your loaded apps/games, setup other email/social accounts, or setup your widgets, etc. Search the forums for backup/restore options or just do it manually.

If you decide to not go to a Verizon store, I believe you can remove/add the phones via a phone call to Verizon.
MAKE SURE THE ESN IS CLEAN! Ask the seller for the ESN#, call Verizon and ask customer service to check to see if it is clear. Before you pay for the phone, open the back, remove the battery and look at the MEID HEX number. Make sure it matches the ESN number the seller gave you. If not, the seller lied to you, walk away.
