Root radio question

droid inc2 on verizon

most of my searches resulted in threads where people were having radio issues with root and couldn't get a signal at all. my question is a little different.

i've got cell and data and its not usually a problem in well covered areas. but i've noticed lately that where i use to have "2 bar coverage" i now have none and just an overall diminished quality of my signal.

i started noticing the issue after i recently loaded a backup ROM to play with it a little to see if i wanted to make a change. i decided to keep my current ROM and setup so i loaded the current backup.

questions:
should that change anything with the radio?
is it a hardware issue that may have always been ther eand i'm just noticing it? (i noticed in same areas colleagues have better signal on Galaxy S and Droids).
is there a better firmware than (pg32img)...is that even what you call it? firmware?

any thoughts on how i might improve radio signal?

The Radio is not affected by flashing roms, it can only be changed by flashing a PG32IMG.zip.
The signal strength can only be reliably read from settings as a db number. Bars are an inacurate representation of signal strength, and can vary from rom to rom.
If you aren't having actual connectivity issues (dropped calls/ no data), then disregard the bars.
Unless something with your hardware could have changed from a drop or getting wet, that probably isn't it. Just make sure your battery cover is on tight since it IS the antenna.
All radios are flashed with a file called PG32IMG.zip what they contain will vary. I suggest getting the newest radio if you haven't yet.
