Help Radio streaming - buffering problems when phone locks

Hi. I've come across a problem when streaming radio streams using my HTC Wildfire, running on Froyo 2.2. The same problem occurs whether I use either the Tune In Radio or WunderRadio apps, so I don't think it's a problem related to the apps used.

The problem seems to afflict streams using wma format, as opposed to mp3 (maybe wma uses more processor power to decode the streams?). Thinks are generally OK until the lock screen on the Wildfire appears, when more often than not on wma streams, the stream will cut and buffer. Tune In Radio will recover the stream but the buffering problem will repear, whereas WunderRadio never recovers once the stream is interrupted.

I have a workaround, which is rather less than ideal - because it severely restricts battery life. If I disable the lock screen, so that the display is always on, the streams normally keep going without interruption. Battery life can be improved a little by reducing the scren brightness right down, but this is far from ideal.

It does not appear to be a problem with a dodgy wifi signal - the problem occurs even when the phone is close to the router.

Does anyone know if there is a way of reliably listening to a radio stream on the Wildfire, particularly those in wma (Windows Media Audio) format, without having to disable the lock screen or have the display on at all times?
