Root Radio update...

Hey guys I posted this on the radio thread over at XDA but never got any bites... I just want to confirm some info regarding updating my radios.

Sorry for the redundancy but I just want to confirm im doing this correct. First off, I am running CM6.1.1, do I need to flash a sense rom prior to doing the updates or can I stay on CM? Also if I do have to switch to a sense rom, does it have to be based on 3.70?

I have read numerous posted stating not to flash the combo and just flash them individually, so I only need to flash the new radio and wimax correct (since people are having issues with 1.90)?

Now regarding flashing, flash the radio from recovery, once done select reboot. Once to the phone has booted, power back off into recovery, then flash wimax, select reboot and that's it?

Thanks for any help in advance!!! I know this is a total noob question but hey its better to be safe than sorry especially since I have never updated radios before. I only get nervous about radios for some reason... :D:D:D I know you can cause some serious prolems updating radios if you don't do it correctly. Thanks again!

20 bucks says akazabam will reply with in 5 minutes!! (He's on top of this stuff!!!) :D

I just updated my radios last night, a little different situation since I went from one sense rom (myn's 2.2) to another (mikfroyo 4.2) but first I confirmed that my kernel was compatible, which it was (netarchy 4.2.1 sbc more havs) I downloaded the "combo" of radios, wiped cache and davlik, flashed the combo zip, it rebooted a couple times before actually starting up and then everything was fine, I went into to software to make sure that they updated, and they did. I then switched from myn's rls 4 to mikfroyo 4.2 and all is good. FWIW myn's rls 4 is a 3.30 and mikfroyo is a 3.70, but I didnt have problems with either. 4g is working

What htc kernels do the radios not play nice with? So I take it I should flash over to a sense rom first? Man no wonder why I avoid this. I never get confused when it comes to rooting, only radios ;)

Haha, sorry, I'm 30 minutes late :p. I think I can probably help you. I don't use CM, but the principles should all be the same:

1) I'm 98% sure you can flash the radios while on CM, BUT if I were you I would flash a sense ROM, first, reboot, then go back to recovery for the radios. The reason I say this is because you will want to update both PRL and Profile after, and both should be done from a sense ROM. Pick any old sense ROM you want. No need to restore anything to it. You should, however, stick with a 3.70-based ROM as you suspected. After you reboot, if you are on anything older a) there's a good chance it won't even boot with a stock HTC kernel and b) PRI 1.90 should not be flashed with an older ROM even if you have a different kernel. Save yourself the trouble and stick with 3.70.

2) I flashed the combo update, but I like to live dangerously like that :p. Honestly, it's pretty much debatable. Some say to do one at a time, some don't. If you do one at a time, you give yourself the benefit of know which update caused a problem if you run into any. However, if you do the combo update and have a problem, you can downgrade one at a time, starting with PRI. I do remember reading somewhere that 0003 Evos had issues with the combo update. I have a 0003 phone, and it's fine. Take that with a grain of salt.

3) Ok, so, first of all, I'm pretty sure you have RA, right? I'd stick with RA for it if I were you. I have not good reason for this other than I've heard other people I trust say you should, and it's what I did. What you do is flash the zip from recovery like anything else. If you're going to do the combo update, it's just one flash. If you do them separately, you can boot up in between, but you should start with baseband if you do. You'll probably see some instability if you start with the others. It's not that you'll permanently break something by flashing them out of order. It's that 3.70 and the HTC #15 kernel require the new radio to work right.

So, the flash process is a little different. Once the radio flash is done, it will prompt you to reboot. When it does, it will pop up with a black screen and green down arrow. It might stay there for several minutes. Don't panic. Don't touch anything. It will reboot when it's done. Once it does, it will dump you back into recovery. From there, reboot normally, and make sure the system is stable. Once you are done with all the radio update, update both your PRL and Profile. I trust you know how to do that.

4) Once you're done with that, go ahead and restore your nandroid backup of CM. Of course, if you had to switch recoveries to RA, switch back first. I don't know why I'm tell you that. I know you know the basics :).

4) It's always better to ask questions and know exactly what you're doing before you pull the trigger. I was pretty nervous about doing it, too, before I did. I totally freaked out when it sat at the black screen for a few minutes. For whatever reason, there is no step by step guide for this that explained that.

Ok, so I was 30 minutes late when I started writing this. Now I'm 45 minutes late. Oh, well :p. I hope this helps.

EDIT: haha, you guys had a nice little conversation while I typed all this out. Yeah, I forgot the obvious step of going to about software information and verifying the radios updated. Also, another thing you should definitely do first is backup your wimax RSA keys. Also, in as sense ROM, as root, in terminal, run wimax_mtd. It will show your current wimax version, mac address, and run some tests. Do this before and after the wimax raido update. Also, of course, do the normal check for your RSA keys after, as well. More than likely, though, if your RSA keys got wiped out, wimax_mtd won't run right.

The new baseband radio won't work right with any kernel other than HTC #15. If you try it with the previous kernel (HTC #17) or anything older, it will not work right. Some people manage to make it boot, but almost invariably have other issues such as wake time = up time, etc. Also, PRI 1.90 on any SW version other than 3.70 will cause problems.

Akazabam you always come through with a some great info!! Yea I totally feel like a noob, but hey I'm ok with that. HAHA.

I'll do the combo pack, if need be I can always downgrade the prl and nv.

Also just to confirm (I've been out of the loop with sense roms for quite some time now) if I flash MikeFroyo (3.70) with the stock htc kernel, it will boot up and be compatible with the new radios? I am so confused with what kernels do and do not work.. Like I said, I avoid threads based on radios since I can usually offer zero help. lol Maybe I should have paid more attention.

And by the way, THANKS!

Oh, one more thing - While I was verifying everything after the first boot, the phone locked up after about 3 minutes, and rebooted itself. It was in the middle of syncing, and it just shut off and rebooted. I thought I was stuck in the dreaded boot, lockup, reboot deal. I don't know why, but it only happened once. So, if that happens to you, give it another cycle before giving up and downgrading.

Lol, it's no problem at all :). Once you do it once, you get the hang of it. Beyond that, it just take a ton of reading to understand what does and doesn't work, and why.

Anyway, Mikfroyo 4.2 is based on 3.70, and, unless something has changed recently, uses HTC #15, so that's fine.

Thanks for this info guys.
Im planning on upgrading to RLS 5 tonight or tomorrow and wanted to double check all of this, because im giong to have to upgrade my radios.

So, amon is definitely the one i should use to make backups and flash.. i know.. i used that one all the time. But lately ive been stuck on clockwork.

I went ahead and flashed version 3.
Which version is better, between 2.6 and 3? I thought i read something that there was a problem with 3..?

Thanks!

Use clockwork 2.6. Read this if you want a reason:

xda-developers - View Single Post - [NOTICE] ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0+ and update-script

The short story - You won't be able to flash a lot of stuff currently out there with 3.0 right now. Myn has added support for it, though, so you will be able to flash RLS5 with it. I couldn't tell you if the radios will work or not, though. I'd have to go digging through the radio update thread at xda to get an answer to that. It'd be much easier for you to just switch to CW 2.6 or RA 2.2.1

on a side note mikfroyo is freaking awesome, so fast!!! I have to say I like it better than myn's, faster, better widget bar, nicer animations, more internal memeory space, and It comes with adfree and it actually works!! All the versions of adfree I have tried on my own have never worked for some reason.

It's all done boys... and now back on CM! It was a little weird being back on sense. Not sure how you guys do it! ;) Thanks again for the walk through akazabam!!

Done.
Thanks.

So, later on when i get rls5, i plan on fully switching over to amon again.
I used amon and was all backed up with amon, but for some reason i switched over to clockwork lol. I will have to restore a few (a lot) clockwork nandroids i have saved and flash amon then save them again in that individually.

As far as radios, I have my wimax backed up with clockwork and saved, so if i ever need that i can just switch back to clockwork. I cant remember if amon backs that up, ill look it up later.
But i think i have all of my bases covered for jumping to 3.70.
If theres any other things you think i may need to do let me know.

Yeah, I've been hearing that. I'm going to try it out this weekend, but I'm not a big fan of his theming. I'm sure with a little work, I can make it look how I want.

Excellent :). I'm working with Matlock to get this info added to the rooting for dummies guide.

Done.
Thanks.

1) If I were you, I wouldn't bother restoring all your nandroids and rebacking them up with RA. Depending on how many you have, that could take a very long time. Should you want one back, it wouldn't be hard to just flash CW really quick, restore the backup, then switch back to RA. Even I have a few CW backups that I never backed up with RA because I know I can just switch to CW really quick if I ever want one

2) RA did it first ;). Backing up wimax partition has only recently been added to CW.

You should purchase adw ex. Oh man is it fast and super smooth!!

I've been hearing some pretty amazing things about this. I've always been a launcherpro fan, but I'm quickly losing faith in it.

quick question, any way to transfer settings from the free version to the paid version, or do I have to start from scratch with settings etc..?
