RAM Issue

Magnitude

Lurker
I got my Triumph a few days ago and am so far extremely happy with it. I installed CM7 and an overclocking kernel and even managed to squeeze a stable 1900 MHz overclock out of it. Lovely! However, there is one thing I am curious about.

The phone is rated as having 512MB of RAM. However, here I sit in CM7, running Android Assistant (I see the same results in other apps and the OS itself, BTW) and it says "193.94 MB used, 159.31 MB free, total mem: 353.51 MB". That's

I added up all the apps running under the Processes tab and they came out to 59.57 MB. Fairly basic stuff-- Gmail, BeeJiveAIM, Twitter, Avast, Calendar, DSPManager, Micro CPU Monitor, Network Monitor Mini, Temp+CPU V2 Widget, Launcher, RenderFX Widget (not sure why this is running, I don't have that widget or feature enabled), Google Voice, Calendar, Power Control and Avast Mobile Security.

Obviously, those apps don't add up to 193+ MB. Doing the math compared to the total RAM it's listing, I have 158.49 MB of RAM unaccounted for. Is that reserved by the OS? And if so, why isn't it indicated anywhere? I have a little trouble believing Android 2.3 uses over 150 megs of RAM. My previous Froyo based phone only had 256 MB of RAM in it, after all.

Apps are running just fine, and I am not having any performance problems. I just wish I knew what was up with these numbers!

Thanks for any information!

I don't know for sure, but think you are thinking in the right direction. I'm guessing that +- 160MB is waht the Android system processes are taking up. I've never had RAM issues with this phone (although I'm far from a power user), so 512 seems like enough, at least for me. 256 on the other hand is too little at this point- I have a friend who had an original Droid with 256 and it was constantly running up against the RAM limit. I know android is supposed to kill off background apps if need be to free up space, but the phone would still get bogged down.

Oh, just to clarify a little, there's the ~160 MB that is unaccounted for in the "total RAM" figure, and also about 130 MB of the used RAM that isn't accounted for. I'm guessing they're services-- the apps I have running only add up to about 60 MB. So in total, that's 220 MB in use, but by what I don't know.

Thanks :)

usually the way they do it would be like a computer, so you have 512mb of ram but lets say the system itself needs 200mb, so it would say total is 312mb, usually very important system files can be using ram without showing up cause there no need for them to show up on a list

also second note, each app you have stores data, and while im no expert on our devices i would guess just like a pc the app data can take up a small amount of ram until you power off or reboot

ive purposely ran my ram into the ground a few times to see what it would do, and the phone will operate like normal until around 30mb or less ram

Unless I'm mistaken though, the memory pool used by each process includes any data it's dynamically allocating as it runs, not just the size of the program when it's memory resident. Hence, I can see the processes' RAM consumption changing over time. There's some RAM missing SOMEwhere though. Is there an app that can display all system processes, hidden or not? Thanks!

im not sure about the app, there is a post on here somewhere by one of the devs, b_randons name is coming to mind, and they explained what uses the ram before app even get to it

mine is currently 148mb used and 149 mb free, but facebook alone is using 50mb

ill see if i can find that thread

and altho task killers are normally a no-no cause they make the phone over work, i think there are some that let you see hidden files running, and while i dont think they say the size of said hidden file i think they at least show them, so that may be a route
