ram seems low

I'm looking at the RAM status right now and it says 260/687... I thought it was a gig of ram... is this normal? I cleared all the running applications.

Just grabbed our tablet and checked...

In Settings, Applications: RAM 386MB Used, 301MB Free
In Task Manager (RAM manager): 532MB/687MB
There are 3 active applications running.

Interesting to note the discrepancy between the two areas of ram reporting within the Operating System. Although 386+301=687, used RAM does not concur. Perhaps the Settings program is consuming a significant amount of RAM explaining the used RAM discrepancy.

I clicked the "clear memory" button in task manager / ram manager and now it reads 296/687MB

Clicking "clear memory" results in the closing of open applications. The 3 active applications are now closed, reading 0 active applications.

Yes. You loose that 313 mb due to "bloat".

Basically pre loaded apps and settings you are stuck with from the manufacturer.

Not all of that is considered bloat. Some of that memory is allocated to the system which is needed to run ICS, google apps etc. Most of the time that portion of the RAM is untouchable because they are needed to have the tablet run properly. If we had the ability to free up all the built in RAM, it'll probably cause more harm than good. People will probably kill tasks that are not meant to be killed.

But I agree, some of the RAM allocated to bloatware but even if you debloat your tablet, I don't think we will ever have access to the entire 1gb of RAM.
