Help Random, rapid, 'ghost' button pressing!?!?

docdave24

Lurker
What started out as slow response to touch on all aspects of the phone has progressed to ghost keyboard pressing. Particularly while attempting to text the keyboard will enter different letters / numbers than what I am pressing. Sometimes it's a 'neighbor key', but often it's the other side of the keyboard. Then there's when pressing one key sets off a rapid-fire sequence of 'ghost entries'. Literally, 10 - 15 rapid, random entries occur without me touching anything. Is making texting a long project. Or pressing the lower portion of the screen opens something that was at the top of the screen. What's going on with the touch screen???

It could be bad hardware. I hate to suggest this, but one way to find out would be to factory reset and see if the behavior recurs after a fresh install. It may be a warranty/replacement issue at that point.

You could also try turning off text prediction to see if that helps with the keyboard (and definitely turn off haptic feedback on the keyboard if you are using that, to see if that helps.) I think it's Settings->language & keyboard ->touch input settings. Tap text input to turn off prediction and vibrate while typing.

Okay... turned off prediction & already was doing without vibrate. Not sure what "haptic feedback" is??? Would rather exhaust easier remedies before a factory reset... which I would probably need help with too : ) Really appreciate your help doogald & I'll take any I can get!

Sorry. Haptic = vibrate. I couldn't remember what it was called, so I used both.

No change :( Touch buttons just seem to come & go... and once they go, they're gone. Until I put the phone to standby. This seems to 'reset' it to where it will work again. Then it starts all over again, incorrect character input, rapid random character input or simply no response to touch???

Any other suggestions at this point? Or should I try a factory reset as a last resort before taking the phone in? If so, could you assist me with that? Thank you again for all of your assistance!

There is an app called appbak in the market that can create a list of apps that you have installed and then can be used after you factory reset to reinstall all of your apps.

If you need to have access to old SMS messages, there is an app called SMS Backup & Restore which works well (it will not restore MMS messages, though); for call logs, the same developer has an app Call Log Backup & Restore which also works well.

All of these apps are free.

Of course, contacts, gmail and calendars are synced with Google, so once you sign in again with your Google account they will be repopulated.

Anyway, factory reset is in settings->Privacy.
