Help Random reboot

Hoping to get some help from one of you folks who are smarter and more savvy than I:

My Commando has a habit of rebooting itself several times a day. I've spent a few weeks trying to pay attention to what what may cause it, but it really seems to be random. It has only happened once while I was actually using it. Usually it's just sitting there on my desk or nightstand and it suddenly decides to shutdown and start back up again. Other observations:
- Happens when charging and when not charging
- Happens at any battery level from very low to fully full.
- Seems to basically come back to the same state it was in prior to shutting down (i.e. I don't loose apps or configurations)

I know this might be a question.... I do have several apps that run in the notifications bar, or as widgets, or in the background. Basic list (although could be missing some:
- JuiceDefender
- Lookout
- Widget Locker
- Gmail (notifier turned on)
- Yahoo Mail (notifier turned on)
- Handcent
- Weather channel (notifier turned on) (not widget)
- ICE: in case of emergency lock screen widget.
- Plus all of the freak'n Verizon Bloatware apps that I can't stop.

So far it's only been a minor annoyance. But considering how much I rely on my phone for work calls etc., it's only a matter of time before it creates a major problem.

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Sounds like you are running an app or process that your phone does not like.

You're not going to like this. Uninstall everything. Over the next several days install and run the apps, one by one, until you start having the same problem and that will be the one your phone doesn't like.

Its quite possible that it could be a system app that's giving you trouble as well.

I have the same problem. I have rooted my phone a while ago and removed all the Verizon bloatware and other stuff that was listed here in the forums.

I thought the problem was due to Google Nav since it will sometimes reboot if the GPS is lost, also bringing it back to the same state prior to the reboot.

I notice the other day that the phone rebooted just sitting on the desk. I looked over and it happening. No nav this time!

I really do not want to removed everything. Too much time to redo.
Not a lot of stuff being notified. Only mail programs.

@bestaudioguy
OK, yeah, same deal...I just notice it out of the corner of my eye while it's sitting on the desk. Last night it did it while charging, the light of the screen woke me up enough to notice it was happening. Who knows how often it happens when I'm not looking.

@rjglenn
thanks for the advice. I was afraid someone would say that. For practical purposes I can't really delete all apps and start over. I'm going to try taking your advice in reverse...deleting the least import and/or most suspect apps one by one until the problem (hopefully) stops.

I spent over two hours on the phone with Verizon since Monday for the same issue. Being in IT, I had tried everything under the sun short of a Factory Data Reset before calling Verizon. (This is my second Commando, BTW. The first wouldn't allow an upgrade push to the phone. I finally requested a replacement after two system upgrades were not able to install.)

I eventually spoke with someone in Tech Support who told me I needed to complete the Factory Data Reset in order to move forward with seeking a replacement. Begrudgingly, I completed a reset knowing it wouldn't change a thing...and it didn't. Also, to amuse the tech, I reformatted my MicroSD card. No change! The phone continued to randomly reboot several times throughout the day.

Yesterday was the icing on the cake. I called back to Verizon since the tech who was supposed to call me on Tuesday never did. I got in touch with someone in the tech department who asked me to go through the Factory Data Reset AGAIN!!!! I almost blew a gasket! I let her know what I had completed and that the previous tech was in contact with her manager to see about a different phone replacement other than a Commando. She said I would have to go through 4 phones before they would consider a different phone. I asked to talk to her manager and was placed on hold for over 10 minutes only to have the same agent come back. She said she had spoken with her manager who said they could replace my Commando with a Droid X2. I told her that this was unacceptable as a replacement and made her aware of several occasions in the past where individuals who were having phone issues were "upgraded" as a result of their problems. She said that they would not even consider doing something like that for me.

Ultimately, through my frustration, I told her to just send me another Commando. This was the worst encounter to date I have had with Verizon. As a result, I will be writing a letter of complaint to their Atlanta office.

To have gone through all of the resetting, etc. to no avail and then to be told that I could get a legacy phone as a replacement did NOTHING for my satisfaction with or trust in Verizon.

WOW.
Being an IT person you should know that the "tech" on the phone simply use a diagnostic tree that they are told to follow. If that does not work, they refer to a "manager", who really is another tech in the next cube. They put you on hold to make it seem like they are talking to someone. Sometimes they even listen to you while you wait on hold. (they can and do).

Verizon is too big for their own system.

I called them yesterday since all of a sudden I started to use almost all of my 2G data allowed. I come to find out that while using my GPS for over two sucked the data up!
So I mentioned to the "tech" that it seems amazing that I pay $30 for DSL at my home with unlimited data transfer, but my phone I pay the same $30 per month and only get 2G of data! WTF! Seems unfair to me!

This has started me looking at other providers like Boost or MetroPCS that offer unlimited data/phone, etc for $50 per month!
Wonder if there is a way to use my commando on their networks??

@cafebeatty: that stinks. Sounds like your problem is/was even worse than mine. Mine hadn't caused major problems, but I was anticipating that it might.

Update: The issue seems to have lessened. Although I've still had a couple of random reboots. I deleted or changed some of the apps I was running. I can't really pin it on them but will list them in case it's useful to anyone else:
- WeatherChannel: uninstalled
- Battery Solo widget: uninstalled
- Yahoo mail: notifications turned off
- Widget Locker: set to minimal functions (I had a lot going on before)

Here's a list of the apps I uninstalled... Facebook, Big Sport Fishing, Bubble, Googles maps, solitaire, Walgreens, Z-92, QRBarcode, GPS Speed. It's NOT Google Maps because I installed that again 12 hours later and it's been 23 hours since that and no rebooting problems.

Same for me. I stopped using the Google Maps (beta) and the reboots have stopped. I guess once the beta version is a full version it might stop??

Wait, just to be clear, the previous poster said "It's NOT Google Maps.....". I would agree with him since I've also been running Google Maps and it doesn't seem to be the problem. Although I can't 100% rule it out. I've still had a couple of random reboots but not as frequently as when I first reported the problem. I'm starting to think that it's a complicated interaction between multiple apps that will make it very hard to nail down.

Are you using wi-fi? I have had the same reboot problem for some time with mine and it always happens when the phone is feeding on wi-fi, or when plugged into the computer. I've deleted apps and done a factory reset once and got nowhere.

mine still does random reboots. at least once every two weeks i notice it. i'm not sure if it's while I'm using wifi or not, but i'll take note of it next time.

I don't even know where to go with the random reboots...Mine is at 10 a day plus it constantly give me the message "possible sds card found...".

I bought this phone EXACTLY 35 days ago and I'm regretting every minute, I took it to the store the first time 10 days after I bought it because of the random reboot and SDS message. They did updates and fiddled with my apps, I have nothing on it other that the factory added junk. 8 days later I again was in the Verizon store, they did the exact same things the other store did and said they'd send me a new one because maybe this one had a "weird" quirk. Within in 2 hours of getting the 2nd phone it was happening again and it is definitely worse. My husband went in 3 days after that and they said "track when and what it is doing" but we wont replace the phone or let you get a different because the initial 14 days for exchanging for another one is past." My husband came home and his face was so red I thought his head was going to explode. This was 3 days ago and I've logged 69 reboots and 80 SDS messages.

I hate hate hate hate hate this phone, it came out 2 weeks after I bought my previous phone and I have drooled over it since then. What a complete waste of money for me, I have to wait now until I qualify for a new phone and just play the game of logging problems and going to get a "replacement" whenever I can.

@celticredlj

While the phone is new and in good shape - sell it. There is something wrong with the M110 build and you are never going to get Casio or Verizon to admit to it. Someone, somewhere is going to want it and will buy it. You won't make much, but you will probably make enough to get something else usable for the next two years.

The early software builds were great, but with each update it has gotten worse to the point that the phone is not reliable. I have missed important calls because it is rebooting.

I'm waiting for July 11, when I can get another phone to drive myself crazy with - new phone, new problems I'm sure.

I was a big fan until the last two software builds came out. Now like you, I hate this phone. I don't have near the reboots that you appear to be having but battery life is horrible. If I am careful to not wake it up or light the screen it will run for 10-12 hours. If I actually use it then it's much worse.

Thanks for the replies...I showed my husband this forum and after reading every thing he has agreed to try to root the phone. He will give their fixes another month and if it doesn't get any better he will root it for me.

Where do I get info on rooting phones, he's never been willing to even consider it before. I have the list of apps to remove, we just need to figure out how to do it.

If all else fails we will sell it and I will use his current phone when he replaces it at the end of June...(groan). Oh well, lesson learned: Don't drool over something until you've read all the comments from users that have had it.

If you are running M100 or M110 then you will not be able to root it. None of the current methods work. It was a really great phone and rooted it was even better. I got a warranty replacement that got me into the M100/M110 club and I really regret that. If you do happen to come up with a root method post it here, you will be a hero.

Samething has been happing to me it seems like the phone reboots when the available memory gets to low?? Atleast that is what I am finding?

My company just deployed over 100 commandos about 3 weeks ago and it seems like every day i have a new person telling me that their phone is rebooting randomly. My rep says it's the first he has heard of this issue which i think it total BS. Everyone is using PPT and most phones have no new apps installed on them, only an app to block the market. very frustrating....
