Help Random rebooting

I notice a lot of you are looking at it as a software issue. I work as a Sprint technician and have noticed this on several customers phones. It appears that the battery is a little loose. If you remove the back cover try and see if your battery can shift from side to side. I've noticed on the customers that have this complaint the battery seems looser than other 3D's that are working fine, like mine for example. I would exchange it, and for the time being you could try wedging a small piece of paper or business card cutting in there to hold it in place better.

Just checked my battery, and it's not loose at all.

Sorry to say we have to be the Guinea Pigs.

Bought my EVO 3D on Sunday and have had my highs and lows with the phone. Same issues with rebooting reported by other members. By Monday I couldn't even get the phone to turn on or even charge. I did download Chess.com. I'm thinking that was the problem but I'm not certain.

Took it to the the corporate store. They switched the battery and took out the card and the phone booted up. Kinda bitta sweet moment. I had tried that fix and it didn't work for me. So they assumed its a software issue. I should do a factory reset when I read all my messages. Did that

Brought the phone home and the black screen returned. Removed battery ofcourse and it rebooted. Uploaded PRL and installed updates.

Wait! Phone just rebooted?? Sprint advertisement downloading automatically.

Keep you posted. Not loading Chess.com until I satisfied it didn't crash the phone.

I'm trying something new. This time, I've shut off 4G. Completely. Not that 4G matters: even though I live and work in the Dallas, TX area, usable 4G signal is rare for me.

4G has been off for a few days now, and I have yet to get a spontaneous reboot. Let's see if this holds up!

I've been having the same issue with my phone. The phone will randomly lock up in my pocket even after I have not touched it for awhile. The phone will also freeze when I press the power button to bring the phone to lock screen sometimes leaving the button keys still lit up. It's happened once to me while I've unplugged my charger with my phone still on (although my phone was fully charged). I've noticed that when this happens I have my 4G on and also my screen timer set at any duration of time. Recently I set my screen timeout at never time out although it is EXTREMELY annoying, I've had a lot less issues with random freezing.

UPDATE :I've gotten a couple of reboots since last post. Several times I've had to R&R the battery to get a response. I personally think there is just to much software asking for resources that the processor can't figure it all out. With real time applications, advertisements, upgrades, downloads, etc, the CPU either overheats fan :-( reboots or shuts down. I think the processor is more powerful than smart. That's my two cents.

Has anyone besides me tried disabling 4G? What effect does that have on the reboots/hangs/power offs?

And by disabling 4G, I literally mean unchecking it in quick settings, not simply being physically located in an area that has no 4G service.

I have had a regular evo, a replacement, and now have a 3d evo. All have rebooted randomly. My first one didn't do anything for about six months, then started doing it every few days, it seemed like it was when I was away from home, usually using apps. Then it started when I was on the phone too. I finally took it in when it it was happening just sitting in my pocket, and constantly rebooted until the battery was dead most times. The person in the store did a hard reset, and it never stayed on again. He ordered a new one.

New evo a week later. I was offered the $150 upgrade in advance, so I ordered a 3d evo. In the three days it took to get it, my "new" evo rebooted a few times randomly. (I had to use it until I got the 3d)

Queue the 3d evo. It rebooted on the way home from the store a few times. I took the battery out, waited, put it back in. Started up again. Still randomly reboots at least five times per day, sometimes flashes to "htc" screen and then says "loading" and comes back to the home screen after 10 seconds. Mildly annoying. Just sitting there, using apps, exiting internet, wifi on/off, no 4g access here, so I never have that on... totally random.

I love the phone itself, but come on, three phones with the same issue?? Frustrating!!!

I've also been having the Sprint/HTC/EVO 3D/Gingerbread multiple-reboots per day issue. Then I noticed this post relating to stability updates for the Verizon/HTC/Thunderbolt/Froyo...

HTC Thunderbolt Update Starts Tonight – Fixes Reboot Issues, Is NOT Gingerbread - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog

Looks like a couple of weeks ago Verizon pushed out an update to fix a VERY similar sounding reboot problem on the HTC/TB with Froyo... they fixed "an update that started causing an overwhelming number of random reboots for users".

Makes me wonder if that whatever Vz fixed on their HTC phone might need to be fixed on Sprint's HTC phone?

I'm wondering if this is HTC/Sense related? I was about ready to return the phone, but I installed LauncherPro Plus on my EVO 3D after this morning's crash - and so far so good. YMMV. If it stays stable, I'm guessing the problem is Sense & needs a stability update like that which Vz pushed out.

We'll see how if LauncherPro keeps the phone stable...

Random Reboot issues - UPDATE - I returned the phone that had random reboot issues. New phone is running like a champ. No issues...same apps installed as previous phone. Signal strength is better. Stable WiFi. Airplane mode does not require battery remove and replace to bring phone back to life.
Finally a happy EVO 3D owner!

my phone was 'sleeping' this morning sitting on the table plugged into the charger...and suddenly i see the screen light up and its the HTC boot screen. I guess it decided it was time for a reboot lol

Just an update - since I started running LauncherPro Plus instead of Sense as the UI, all freezes and random reboots have ceased.

I went from half a dozen reboots every day on Sense to zero on LP. I switched over 4 days ago, and I've had no random reboots or freezes since then.

My phone just did it's first random reboot. I've had the phone 30+ days without anything like this happening. Was just sitting and the screen lit up & it rebooted. Seems to be working fine. Very strange. Any advice if this happens again?

Edit:
Running completely stock.
Everything turned off except Wi-Fi, 3G, & Auto-Sync.

Question for everyone, do you notice your phone rebooting because it vibrates in your pocket or on your desk? Anyway to track reboots in a day if you aren't checking your phone constantly?

EDIT: Never mind. Was checking battery widget and not Android System.

Up-time in Settings/About Phone/Battery correctly displays time since last reboot.

My phone has done two random reboots today and it is only about one week old (as its a replacement). I have narrowed down the cause of one reboot and pretty much all but officially identified it as a bug. When I play music with the "Music" App (makes my mp3 files full screen) after the music has been playing for a little while and I press pause and play a few times the screen goes black with the buttons lit andthen eventually just shuts off and rebots. Note that the issue is not heat related.

Other than that my other random reboots have been much more random, don't know what causes them!

I know that one, but short of having to go in there however long I was wondering if anyone is using an application or something to check.

It may exist but usually a persistent syslog is used to show or find that data, and that takes persistent storage - a hard drive is used in Linux, but we need something to use the sd card in Android, and that's not built in.

Closest I could find for you cats is Boot Log, free in the Market. Please try it out and let me know if it works for you, I haven't tried it before.

We really need a stability update.

Mine was fine for awhile and then I was outdoors in the 90 degree weather all day recently and it struggled a lot. I think overheating has a lot to do with the reboots, though the following day it did it a couple times too in the cold AC air of my house.
