Help Random reboots

k-spar

Newbie
My gingerbread unrooted Droid x keeps rebooting at seemingly random times, usually when I'm doing multiple things with it. For example most recent was while playing music and trying to rename a folder on my homescreen. Sometimes it reboots while doing nothing though. Any ideas what could be causing it, or ideas on how to narrow it down to something specific?

Did you have this problem before the update?

Have you moved any apps to the sdcard?

It's possible you might need to do a factory reset to fix it. Some people had problems after the previous update that were fixed by a factory reset, but that means you'd have to set up your phone again. Paid apps will re-download from Market.

Is the problem bad enough to redo your phone?

I think I've been having this issue ever since I upgraded to GB. I think a full reset may be worth it, it's very frustrating.

If you've had this issue for months, I'd consider the reset.

I had some instability with mine where occasionally it would have trouble booting after a reboot and twice where the phone was hot and battery dead from a reboot.

I sbf'd to Froyo, rooted, updated to 602 and restored my data (so didn't have to reinstall anything) and it's been great since. Other than the trouble rebooting it was good before as well.

Interestingly I've also been experiencing issues where my connection disappears and only a reboot will fix it. Very irritating... it just happened now and when I noticed it, my phone rebooted on it's own. Wonder if its related

I was having an issue with losing data every couple days after the GB update. But it has yet to happen since the latest update last week. Many others are reporting the same. If you got the update last week and are still having issues, you're the first I've heard that it's still happening to.

Odd, I was having those problems with the original GB OTA, but after last weeks OTA patch, haven't had the reboot or cell connection loss issues at all.

Oh? How do I do that? I've also noticed that whenever it reboots the phone is warmer than usual, almost hot. Weird

Well, I did the factory reset, and I had another reboot. I went to type up this post and it rebooted again! What's my next step, bring it to VZ and request a replacement?

To clarify, you did the reset and reinstalled everything before it was unstable?

I suspect you might have a rogue app installed. Anything you have that causes more trouble than others? You might uninstall all but the necessary apps and see if that helps.

Either way, the first thing VZ would have done was the reset and you've already tried that.

Yeah I did a fresh reinstall and then it started doing this again. I only downloaded some barebone apps... been crashing when playing music, either through google music or spotify, but I've been playing music constantly. Also its often when using the stock browser, but again, probably due to that being the moat frequently used? Maybe it's the somethingawful forum app? Haven't heard other complaints about it though.

Edit: to clarify, I only reinstalled a few things before it was unstable.

The apps I installed were:
Google voice
Handcent
Dropbox
Keepass
Google music
Spotify
MLB at bat
Quickpic
This forums app
Somethingawful forums app
Amazon app store
Beautiful widgets

Try removing your sdcard and see if that improves anything. Note: some apps will complain w/o an sdcard.

If you have a spare card, you could use that. The sdcard is behind the battery.

Huh, well I took it out and so far I've been symptom free, but I can't use a lot of the apps I used when it was crashing, like the music ones.

Do you have a spare card you can use?

Is there anything on your card you need (music)?

Do you have an adapter to mount your sdcard in your computer?

I think the next step would be to plug the sdcard into your computer, copy anything you might need to your computer and let windows format it, then copy anything you backed up to the card and stick it back in and see if that fixes your problem.

When copying stuff to your computer you want to go to your c drive and make a folder with a really short name, like x and copy the contents of the card to that folder. Some files and folder on that card have some really long names and you'll get errors (file path too long) if you don't do it this way.

When formatting the card, just use the defaults which would be fat32, not ntfs file system.

i've had one random reboot since the update. kind of odd; wasn't doing anything with the phone when it happened. hopefully it won't become a regular occurrence.
