Random Thought Thread

I had some time to play with the Chromecast last night, and it's pretty awesome, but if I queue up a list of songs on YouTube and my phone goes to sleep for awhile, the queue disappears. The songs will still play but I can't pause, rewind, etc without starting all over. Is that a normal glitch or what?

Love you too, MSE.

Remote Cast usually helps some. If not, let's chat in the Chromecast forum. :)

While perusing the Google Play TOS I stumbled on this:

Dangerous Activities. NONE OF THE PRODUCTS ARE INTENDED FOR USE IN THE OPERATION OF NUCLEAR FACILITIES, LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS, EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS, AIRCRAFT NAVIGATION OR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS, OR ANY OTHER SUCH ACTIVITIES IN WHICH CASE THE FAILURE OF THE PRODUCTS COULD LEAD TO DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR SEVERE PHYSICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE.

I hope people controlling the nuclear facilites around the world are not relying on a $0.99 app from Play. I'd hate for them to be violating the TOS.:vroam:

Standard boiler plate disclaimer, we are not responsible and don't blame or sue us if your plane falls out of the sky because of a $0.99 app.

EDIT..

The Apple Mac OS X EULA contains a very similar clause or disclaimer.

E. YOU FURTHER ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE APPLE SOFTWARE AND SERVICES ARE NOT
INTENDED OR SUITABLE FOR USE IN SITUATIONS OR ENVIRONMENTS WHERE THE
FAILURE OR TIME DELAYS OF, OR ERRORS OR INACCURACIES IN THE CONTENT, DATA OR
INFORMATION PROVIDED BY, THE APPLE SOFTWARE OR SERVICES COULD LEAD TO
DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR SEVERE PHYSICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE,
INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION THE OPERATION OF NUCLEAR FACILITIES, AIRCRAFT
NAVIGATION OR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL, LIFE SUPPORT OR
WEAPONS SYSTEMS

It's the iTunes EULA that has the ridiculous clause IMO.
Apple EULA Prohibits You from Making an Atomic Bomb Using iTunes

I'm pretty sure I don't want to use any of Apple's crap products to power my doomsday device. I'd rather have Linux or Android running on my doomsday device.

wait... what??? itunes? I never agreed to that...and does that also include my world domination play mix? ugh.....great...back to the ol' drawing board...

Even open source licenses like the GPL contain the following wording or disclaimer...

It's down to you to ensure what you use and do is suitable, safe and appropriate for your weapon of mass destruction, aircraft navigation system, life support machine, etc. As Linux and Android are open source you can examine and make any changes necessary to ensure it's suitable, safe and appropriate for your doomsday weapon.

Or you go to a company that does take responsibility, like Boeing or something and you pay them a lot of money. NASA went to Wind River Systems for the operating system(VxWorks) on the Mars Curiosity rover, and NOT Apple, Google or Microsoft.

EDIT:

Here's the Windows EULA disclaimer part..
12. DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTIES. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, MICROSOFT AND ITS SUPPLIERS PROVIDE THE SOFTWARE AND SUPPORT SERVICES (IF ANY) AS IS AND WITH ALL FAULTS, AND HEREBY DISCLAIM ALL OTHER WARRANTIES AND CONDITIONS, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ANY (IF ANY) IMPLIED WARRANTIES, DUTIES OR CONDITIONS OF MERCHANTABILITY, OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OF RELIABILITY OR AVAILABILITY, OF ACCURACY OR COMPLETENESS OF RESPONSES, OF RESULTS, OF WORKMANLIKE EFFORT, OF LACK OF VIRUSES, AND OF LACK OF NEGLIGENCE, ALL WITH REGARD TO THE SOFTWARE AND THE PROVISION OF OR FAILURE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT OR OTHER SERVICES, INFORMATION, SOFTWARE, AND RELATED CONTENT THROUGH THE SOFTWARE OR OTHERWISE ARISING OUT OF THE USE OF THE SOFTWARE. ALSO, THERE IS NO WARRANTY OR CONDITION OF TITLE, QUIET ENJOYMENT, QUIET POSSESSION, CORRESPONDENCE TO DESCRIPTION, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT WITH REGARD TO THE SOFTWARE.

It's a lot more legalese than the GPL, but it amounts to very much the same thing.

Well you can. But it just means you can't go blaming Linus Torvalds, etc, if you go hurting or killing yourself if it goes wrong. ;)

IANAL but I believe it's tort law. Like at a sports facility or parking lot, There's often notices like "WARNING: The owners are not responsible for any loss, injury or death, howsoever caused. Use at your own risk."
