Lady Gaga's Super Bowl national anthem draws comparisons to Whitney Houston's

In fact, when the Mother Monster took to the field Sunday at Levi's Stadium, the current Academy Award nominee gave one of the best performances of "The Star-Spangled Banner" that the Super Bowl has seen, carefully balancing comfort and reverence. She reminded us that she has one hell of a voice without making it all about her. She hit the high notes with ease, which can't exactly be said for everyone.

On a weaker singer, Gaga's ruby pantsuit and sparkly red eye shadow would have become the talk of the performance. But Gaga made the ensemble regal, and didn't let it distract from her vocals.

I always thought Lady Gaga had a great voice, and could actually sing. Unlike a lot of fashionable pop stars. Just listen to the coaches on 'The Voice' try to sing without the aid of effects such as reverb, compression and auto-tune, and it quickly becomes clear that they have very little natural talent.

So - is it a new thing now, to tip at casual food places like Jersey Mike's (like a Subway or Chipotle, where they custom make your food at the counter)? I stopped in after work to get a sandwich for dinner, & the pay thingy where I swiped my card gave me the option to tip. Is it now customary to tip at places like this?

I think it's just part of the POS equipment they use. I'm not going to tip them unless they do something extraordinarily nice.

Meanwhile, here's a view from our private balcony at the hotel:

I only tip for wait service. I'm not going to tip at a grab n go type restaurant.

Good, that's what I thought too - but I asked the person who made my sandwich when I saw that & she said a lot of people tip. I wasn't sure if she was just hoping I'd fall for that, or if it was actually a new thing. I believe in tipping but I never do at this type of place; but I also didn't want to look like a cheapskate if it's just a new thing I wasn't aware of.

On another topic: Every time I see a reference to "POS", I have to think about it to figure out what it means besides "piece of ..." :D

Subway usually has a tip jar at the cash register. I'll normally drop my change or a dollar in there unless they're rude or unusually slow.

Point of sale is also the junk shoved in the center of the supermarket aisles to get you to compulsive buy. Usually high profit items.

It also stands for piece of s***. which some of the compulsive buy articles are.

Lady Gaga, of all people, just belted out the best National Anthem I've heard in a long time... looked great doing it too.
Absolutely Agree!

Watch Lady Gaga slay the national anthem at Super Bowl 50

Lady Gaga kicked off Super Bowl 50 with a stirring rendition of the national anthem that proved equally patriotic, powerful and pop song. The Mother Monster peppered her performance with riffs circa Christina Aguilera and extra high notes a la Mariah Carey, which are fitting as they are some of the the founding mothers of pop music.

Personally, I was completely amazed at her performance!

Her rendition of the National Anthem actually reminded me of the epic performance that the late Whitney Houston gave at Super Bowl 25

Someone compared Gaga's outfit to a Pokemon... then proceeded to wish that the odds be in her favor.

It's very comfortable here on Catalina. I'm sure it's hot as hell during the summer, though. If I can get Dngrswife up, we will do a semi-sub tour this morning and then go to the Wrigley memorial.

Definitely not going back to that one steakhouse, though...

I've never had a case on any of my zillion droids, just dedicated my left front pocket as phone-only. Got nowhere to keep change anymore.
