Help Randomly Turning Off?

Oh, well, maybe not the word per se - more some kind of abbreviation. :p

Anyway, since I updated to 2.3.3. XWKPO, (at samfirmware.com) I had no SOD. Been almost a week.

[fingers crossed that this is THE solution...]

Please keep us posted on your experience with this version of GB and whether or not you experience anymore SoD.

I have tested the same issue... "Display randomly going off"..
Initially, used to keep the wifi ON always.. & i used to experience the same issue atleast 1-3 times a day..
Now, i switch OFF the wifi wen not required... & have tested for 3 days.... Works fine... So, i too believe the issue is with the wifi driver.. For sure cannot be a h/w issue..

How have you reached the conclusion it is the driver?
The driver is cheap and easy to replace/repair yet Samsung have not addressed it. Replacing the driver would have been a real company credibility saver yet they haven't done it - why? Easy; because it is a hardware problem.

After leaving this issue for a while (a few month) I've now checked to see if somebody have a new idea - and it seems guys are going in circles.
I've managed to avoid the SOD just by not putting any SD card in the phone.
it seems there's some hardware bug on the SDIO bus (WIFI and SD are on the same bus) causing the software to hang. this is ofcourse a software bug also, since the software should just retry to read from the device or even reset the SDIO device - but as we can see, the software just goes into a deep sleep.
I guess different handsets have a slight different problem, and that the reason why some guys have a slight different behavior of the problem.
the conclusion is simple - hardware bug which enables a software bug.
I'm sure 100% that it can be solved by software, since the SDIO is an external bus which should not be able to kill the application processor.

Will test this out! Thanks!
However, I don't think that it is an acceptable solution. Samsung shouldn't make a phone that cannot handle an SD card... My internal memory is almost full already. :( My 4 year old Blackberry was better built than this phone...
But if that helps me getting rid of the annoying issue, then I think that's the way to go.

Samsung ACE SOD wifi fix

After using the phone without SD card for a couple of month, lately I needed the SD card a bit more (can't install anything without the card, you need it as temp storage ..)
I looked a bit more, and found that there is a new firmware for the Samsung ACE - XWKPT (release date aug 11). this release is 2.3.3 and not 2.3.4 as previous one - a bit strange, but kernel version on both is 2.6.35.7.

Any way, with this release (which has different AR6000/wifi driver) I have the phone running now for two days without any SOD - previous record was 20 minutes. (WIFI + SD !!!)
firmware is from www.SamFirmware.com
I've also installed the 2.3.4 RTL fix (with deodex) and it also works fine together.

Now lets see if this solution is final or just better statistics ...

Claiming a solution is somewhat pre-mature after 2 days!
I have no confidence this will resolve it for all.

Tried the no SD card method and it didn't solve the problem for me. Still having SOD every other day, with or without SD card in it.

claiming for a fix after two days is possible, since i have a wifi scenario here causing SOD after 5-15 minutes.
now it's already 3 days - no SOD at all.
regarding all those who claim it doesn't solve the problem (nor the without SD workaround) - you have another problem causing SOD on your device.

So far, now a bit over 222 hours with no sleep of death or other issues.

Sir, I wanna know what did you do with your Ace. I have been experiencing this a lot recently. I believe though that this is not a hardware issue. My officemate had an Xperia 8 on Gingerbread and rarely uses his wifi. Even before I had my Ace, he has been experiencing this SOD. I had my Wifi settings to never turn off even if the screen is off. I experience this even when my wifi is turned off and even with no active applications. My officemate told me, it maybe because of a memory dump or something. I dunno. I'm still not so sure. I hope there will be a way to prevent this from happening again.

The 2.3.3 update from Kies (CPW update) has solved my wifi SOD issue, however, it has brough many more....ie:

  • Phone is very laggy now
  • When on a call and I move the phone from my ear, the screen does not light up to allow me to end the call. The new firmware has made the motion sensor very laggy also!
  • The biggest problem is not being able to send MMS messages at all and can't send SMS messages unless either data packet service is turned off, wifi is on or 2G only is enabled.
Wish I hadn't updated.

Actually, I wish I never got the Ace. They should rename it the Samsung Galaxy Arse.

@extend

Well, we got a replacement SGA and kept it on default settings. It has had a random shutdown once since than. But not a sleep of death type thing. Pressing the power button revived it. No need to remove the battery. I do make it a point to reboot every 10-15 days. Still not on GB though.

Wrote about my experience here: http://mobileraptor.blogspot.com/2011/06/samsung-galaxy-ace-sleep-of-death-issue.html

Yes, next time I get my wife a phone I am getting her an HTC. In fairness though, our Samsung Galaxy Tab GSM/3G has been a model of reliability.

Thanks, Sir. I've read your blog about it. However, I'm still not yet fully convinced that it is a hardware problem. Just like what I've said, my friend had the same issue and symptom on his Xperia just before I bought my Ace. I dunno what he did to his phone afterward and said that he's no longer experiencing SOD after upgrading to Gingerbread. I'm gonna wait for updates though.

The latest sw update to 2.3.3 via kies has completely solved the issue for me. Phone is up for 6 days now without any problems. So it turned out to be SW issue after all:)

Just to let you all know the cure for this. I had to return my wife's phone to Samsung Malaysia as it had the same problem of turning off.

They checked the phone over and upgraded the firmware to Gingerbread 2.3.4 it's been back a week and it hasn't turned off yet. It's faster and has new layout.

Their comment was that it is purely a firmware fault.

I ended up giving up, and have now got a Samsung Galaxy Ace. Interesting about the Gingerbread fix. Will ask someone a bit more up with the play than I am about how I might upgrade it.

I just upgraded mine to official 2.3.4 and I think I'm loving the slight visual changes. There were some missing options like the message skin option and turning on/off USB debugging. I don't know if USB debugging is already turned on for this.

I have started facing the SOD after i have upgraded to Gingerbread, a few months back. Lately is very painful as it won't last even a few hours unless is on power.
I probably need a reset or format, but how can i get everything back on. I am looking for the simpliest way other than rooting, etc cause then i would need a whole weekend on this.
Currently i have 2.3.3 on, so either want to go back to the previous version i was, if that is possible, reinstall the firmware (2.3.3) or ideally go to 2.3.4 which is not available for me yet(how come?)
I appreciate any help you can provide me.

The only thing which prevents me from getting SODs is by using the SD card which was supplied with the phone, if I use any other card my phone still has SODs.

Exactly the same for me. Even bought a 8gb samsung sd card but still SOD'd, but more so! Stoopid phone... but I still love it; much much better than my previous one, despite it's obvious, um, personality problems...:o

UPDATE

From 19June to 02Aug, no SOD using this method (WI-FI KEEP ALIVE application)

UPDATE: from last post up to today (10OCT2011) no problems using WI-FI KEEP ALIVE application

Upon checking on my desktop and samsung KIES, gingerbread 2.3.4 is available (Philippines) and I updated immediately.

After update and rebooting, I removed my WI-FI KEEP ALIVE application and will let you know what happends...

extra note: holding HOME then press power button enables screen capture =)
