Root rant donor phone

I have a HTC EVO 4G phone that I want to flash to boost. I have found numerous pages that have some step by step but they all talk about a "rant donor phone". What the heck is that?

Do I need another phone of some type or can I just flash the phone I have to boost mobile?

Do I need a boost account first?

I am cornfused and hope someone can help me on the righted path.

From what I understand, you need a phone from boosts network to do this. A rant is a phone
