Rant Thread - What really grinds your gears?

Do your kids dare to be unruly?

Yes they can do sometimes, what I do is take their names, and let the school sort out any punishments.

That was a serious breakdown of classroom discipline, teacher should have said "Get out, you're on report." Although it got me thinking, if there was a brawl in a UK classroom and teachers where involved, I don't think it would be world news.

"Could you come out to the gate and splice in this wire harness for the lighting?"

Well, you know it would be a lot easier for us to do that in the hangar...

"No, we can't bring it to the hangar. We've got everything already, even three spools of extension cord for your heat gun..."

Okay...

*** Drive to airplane. ***

So, did you try changing all the florescent bulbs?

"Yeah, we changed both these lamps."

What about that third one?

"Oh! Yeah, no we didn't try that one."

Pretty sure that one's bad.

"Are you sure?"

How about we change out and find out?

"Uh... Wow, I guess it was bad..."

You interrupted my lunch for this. I'm going to sit in my shop for an hour of overtime just for that.

Well, Dngrswife wanted me to resurrect my firewall so we can impose some restrictions on usage after 'bedtime'. Basically, one or more of my adult children are up all night chatting and whatnot, disturbing those of us who are trying to sleep and not getting up until afternoon the next day.

Thus, and therefore, the internet must be turned off at 2300 or so. At least Skype...

Well, problem one is that the firewall appliance I built would not work with the modem I was given by my ISP, which is why it hasn't been in use over the past few years. I found a site that had the information I need to hack into the modem and use advanced commands to push it into true bridge mode. Considering that this is a literal hack of said modem, if I screw it up, then I will get zero support from my ISP, who may or may not be able to detect my shenanigans and would definitely charge me big time for a replacement modem.

I mentioned this quandary on another site and was given a bunch of flak for wanting to hack my modem. Ooh, the ISP will know and they will punish me (with unspecified consequences). One person provided me with a link for a legal bridging method... I said I would try it.

So, I turned off the internet for a few hours and banged my head against a (fire)wall.

Of course, there was the hue and cry over the internet being unavailable (oh noes, what are we to do with ourselves with no internet?! How about read a book?). Then there was a near-uprising when it was found out that the reason for the outage was the imposition of a curfew.

I finally gave up for the night, and restored everything to status quo, but my one daughter won't give up the argument and questions of how, why... I didn't bother telling her that I didn't actually put the curfew in effect, and I am not going to go into a technical explanation that she won't understand anyway.

Buying something from Amazon and when you receive it finding out it went on sale while you were waiting.
They are the worst (or best?) at changing prices randomly and constantly. I've done a few online chats with them when that's happened and they always give me the lower price.

There are places that will keep track of that for you and file requests for the lower prices, they take a cut of course but you get some money back. I can't think of any of their names (because it's tooooo early and I haven't finished my coffee) but I know they are out there! I remember reading about one and half thought about joining but decided not to at the time. May have to hunt it all down again.

I hate when Amazon drops a movie while you're watching it...

... and their random book deals: by the time I find out the book is on sale, the price has already shot back up.

Seriously, some of these prices seem to be tied to the stock market or something, the way the fluctuate over the course of a day.

If you think Amazon is bad - try deciphering Kobo. (That's another e-reader from Canada) I bought one book and found some freebies in with the download that I didn't order. Since the Glo now gives the format of the book, those got deleted.

Any Amazon books I buy I have to run through Calibre. The Kobo Glo prefers EPUB. The Vulcan owns the junk Kindle I bought for the kitchen.

Last year Amazon did put up a page of sales that kept active. I had it bookmarked and then lost it. It was around Xmas, but was still going in Feb. Mother's day is coming so I'd log in and read through the whole site and see if there is a link.

I prefer the ePub format, myself.

And since I use a Linux as my primary OS, I end up booting into Windows so I can download the Kindle book, then import it into Calibre, reboot back to Mint KDE, then import from the Calibre (Win) folder into my Calibre (Linux).

^^^ I saw that this morning too, and between defacing national treasures, to killing dolphins and wildlife to take a selfie with them, I am fairly convinced that (the majority) of the human race is doomed. It's truly disgusting what people will do. We have a world full of self interested, self absorbed, entitled idiots.

It's sad, my oldest is 15 this year, what kind of a world will be left by the time he hits 40?

I keep the Kindle Daily Deals page open on a tab in my browser, then refresh it once a day when I'm checking my internets. I used to dig through the countdown deals a lot, but I have too much of a backlog on my Kindle to do much searching lately. Between the daily deals and BookBub, I buy books faster than I read them lol.

Same here, LOL, plus the occasional Humble Bundle or the freebies of the month...

I have too many tabs open as it is without having an Amazon page open all the time.

As a 26 year old... Kinda thinking a Mad Max type of world has its merits

I just realized an easy solution to a complex problem: how to shut off part of the internet for certain people at certain time periods ...

Instead of going to great lengths to put my fancy firewall back up and all, I can just run down to the corner store and pick up a timer and plug the router into it.

Plug the offending machines into that one router, and voila! instant curfew.

I'll still put the firewall back up, but I'll be able to take my time getting to that.

Why is it that I have a literal dozen cables to charge my phone and tablet but not a single one of them will allow data to go through them?

Gave my last good cable to Dngrswife and had to borrow it back from her an hour later.

Gear grind for this Friday. If someone uses the toilet facilities, and finds that they dumped something the toilet could not flush, the decent thing to do, would be to clear the blockage wouldn't it? Not leave the problem for the next person to handle.

Being woken up at 2 in the morning by my phone receiving an AMBER alert notification. Holy hell, could they make that sound any more jarring? It's not a damn nuclear air raid! Then, I get it shut off and manage to get back to sleep. One hour later it goes off again, letting me know the kids were found. SHUT THE HELL UP! THEY'RE SAFE NOW DONT WAKE ME UP!
