razr maxxx announced

I bought my Razr for $80 from Best Buy matching a HHGregg pricing screwup on their national site. For two days a month or so ago HHGregg showed on their national site that price. It was supposedly only supposed to be on some regional site but ended up national. They caught it and the day after I bought it it went back to the regular $299 price. I also had Best Buy reward pts that brought the total back down to $26! So I got it pretty darned cheap which means I won't be returning it for the MAXX. What I WILL be doing though is going to Amazon and buying a external battery. I can get the Moto one that will do a extra charge for like $8 or probably what I'll do is go for a larger 5800 one that does 4 charges and it'll charge up the wifes Nook color, the kids games and has a built in flashlight and is about the size of a flat D sized battery with rounded edges. That just seems like the best way to do it. It comes with short and long cables to charge with. Cannot ever imagine running out of batt with that thing around! Most of the time I'm using a plug in anyway but for the times I'm not near a outlet, this will more than do the trick and for $40 as opposed to returning, upgrading to the Maxx for another $200+.

I don't understand the reaction here... The Maxx is groundbreaking in a very important way. More battery capacity is just what's needed badly in the LTE handset space.

I'm finally making the long-desired switch from Sprint to Verizon, and the Razr Maxx will be my first device. Bonus: my Lapdock 100 makes the switch, too!

Just swapped Razr for Maxx as i had one day left with VZW on returns policy for xmas.. straight swap.. looking forward to that big battery

Kinda pissed about this announcement! My RAZR gets about 15 to 20 hours on light use, 10 to 15 on moderate, and 6 to 10 with real heavy use. I'm a light to moderate user so it last me all day which I'm happy about. Once I start to watch a good bit of Netflix, YouTube, flash vids, stream live NFL Mobile, stream live NFL Sunday Ticket or use the navigation my battery starts to drain kinda fast. But here's why I'm really worried ... I DON'T HAVE 4G IN MY AREA YET!

Now when 4G comes to my area I expect my battery will be worse. All I want is a phone that last at least 8 to 10 hours no matter what I do with it just in time to get to a charger. I'm not talking about streaming for 4 straight hours no one stares at their screen for that long only in very rare circumstances. What I'm talking about if I'm using my phone with light and moderate use and I wanna stream a 1 to 2 hour game or video and still make it home to my charger. I get that now in 3G will I get it on 4G?

While I like the thinness and weight of my RAZR having the bigger battery would make this phone a perfect 4G device. Coming from a Droid X that was 9.9mm thick the Razr Maxx is 8.9mm! Thinner that my old X!

It seems like Motorola put out the Razr knowing that the battery life was good on 3G but ok to poor on 4G! Put out the Maxx to correct it. All they did was took the Razr and added a bigger battery and changed the battery door. If Moto charged $50 to send in my Razr and turned it into a Maxx I would do it. What I don't understand is how Moto PR department doesn't think that releasing a improved Razr 2 months after the original won't piss off alot of people.

And yes I do use smart actions I have at least 8 different profiles for different situations to save battery life.

If you want to use Netflix, YouTube, watch movies etc., there is currently no phone on the market apart from RazrMaxx (not really available yet) that will hold charge considerably longer than your Razr. That is just how it is - using data means a lot of battery use.

It has been discussed in depth in here and is easy to do - buy an external battery pack and do not worry about battery life.

My personal opinion only - the phone is there to be used and if battery does not last, recharge it and keep using it. Do not stop using the phone only because battery does not last.

To put out a new version with basically just a bigger battery 2 months after intro is b*llsh*t. That screams we didnt really have this ready, but wanted to throw the phone out there while demand is high. Us Razr original model buyers just got screwed big time. This is the same crap Sony pulls. Putting out multiple follow up models with improvements months after intro.

For that reason, and the stupid proprietary media and plugs they use, I never buy sony, and I guess Moto is going on that list.

Very poor PR Moto when you had a chance to come back with a very good product

If I wanted a brick like the Maxx, I would have taken a Rezound. I wanted a very slim and sexy phone and MAxx is everything but sexy. I do not feel screwed at all.

A brick ? Really ? 1.89mm of extra width and a whopping 18 extra grams takes the thinnest phone on the market to a brick ?

Maybe to you, but to me it screams we're fixing a mistake.

These are two completely different phones - fashion vs power user.

I strongly disagree. They are the same phone; one with the larger battery that the original shoudl have had. It is not a brick in the sense that the rezound is a brick; it is still as thin (thinner) than the galaxy s2. All it does it flatten out the back.
-
As I said before I believe this is moto response to the general negative response towards the battery (call it a defect) in the original model.
-
Yea moto is releasing the maxx but to be honest that turns me off more on moto for doing it AFTER the return period then make me awe moto (I understand there will be new phones everyday but I view this more of a cheap shot by moto then a 'totally new phone' by moto).
-
So I'll stick with the razr but my gut feeling is I will switch to samsung third (or maybe fourth by that period) evolution of the galaxy on my next phone.
-
Moto phone has nice antennae but their marketing and software dept need a lot of work (esp the marketing side - which includes product design and release roll outs, announcements of software changes and such).
-
Anyways it is what it is and the only true way to change a company (esp one like moto) is to vote with your wallet.
-
Having said that I'm reasonably pleased with the phone 'cept for the crappy battery life.
(my tone has changed a bit because I took my first trip with the phone and realize that when actually using it heavily I cannot depend on long battery life).

Yeah, Moto really messed up not having this as an option when the RAZR was released. Right now the RAZR Maxx is probably the phone I'll get next (Verizon).

Agree, that was one of the deciding factors between the Rezound and the Razr...My battery life is fine since I have chargers everywhere and love the sleekness of the phone

I will probably hold resist the Maxx for a few reasons and partly due to apathy:

1. Already have the clam shell case w/stand. Works great and fits with my belt loop cases.

2. I have an extended battery that has 4X the battery of the Razr and small enough to stow- if I know I will need it. Use it with my iPod4 and View as well.

3. The Razr 2 will 99.9% probably hit by late in the year and will probably have a higher res display and a quad chippy. Just a guess FWIW.

4. Apathy due to constant new devices and a diminished return constanly chasing new devices. Plus, I already have the Razr set up juuuust right :)

Isn't cost a factor since your razr was on 2 year contract and a new device would be full cost ?

Btw which external extended battery are you using ? I'll probably pick one up for trips; but not sure which one(s) has correct voltage.

I paid $30 for the BB buy back, so at least 40% of the retail price by that time. I paid $300, so should work out to like buying a phone on discount.

I use a Cinch portable power pack

All (unless faulty) power packs should be fine, since outputting normal USB charge voltage.

Motorola is "damned if they do, damned if they don't"...

Let's face it--we all know how fast this tech game moves these days. There's no guarantee what we buy won't be superseded in a month or two. The days of waiting a year for the next great pocket PC are long gone--especially with Android handsets. Manufacturers will keep pushing the envelope for smaller, faster, more powerful devices, and we'll all be left behind until we open our wallets again. That's just a fact of life.

To those saying "screw Motorola, I'm going with _______ next time!" I can only say "good luck". Motorola makes, on the whole, the best-performing CDMA handsets (I'm talking radios here) that money can buy, they have for a long time, and they'll keep doing so. Others, particularly Samsung, can be hit-or-miss (mostly miss with Samsung). My advice is to choose carefully based upon performance and leave emotion out of the decision. YMMV.

so when you say "swap", are you with out a phone right now?

My 14 days expires Jan 25th! When I heard about the Maxx a few days ago I went back to the Verizon kiosk at Costco and the fellow hadn't heard of it yet. I also checked out a nearby Verizon store and they too had not heard of the Maxx.

Again this is a red hearing (well the damned if they do, damned if they don't is true). This is not a technology change. It is the same phone with a larger battery.

We all understand that technology changes; and that will drive new and (hopefully better phones). Ala faster processor; more energy efficient radios and processors; higher resolution screens an so forth.

This phone, the maxx, is a razr with a new back and larger battery. That is not innovation; it is response to market reaction.

Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX hands-on

However, it’s worth noting it’s been amped with a total storage capacity of 32GB – broken down to 16GB of internal storage and a 16GB microSD card.

The original Droid Razr could accept 32GB and even the 64GB microSD memory cards. The Razr Maxx is different, the maximum it can accept is ONLY a 16GB memory card.

So for that reason despite the attractive of the new bigger battery, i would still prefer the original Razr.

Then when you guys get the Maxx and quad core phones come out at the end of the year we will be complaining. The phone technology is fluid and ever changing. I try not to have buyers remorse on phones as I know that as soon as I own it there is a new phone out within a couple months. The Razr, for me, works great and will get me through until my next upgrade..

The Maxx supports up to 32GB...
DROID RAZR MAXX - Extended Battery Life - Android Smartphone - SPECS - Motorola Mobility, Inc. USA

...same as the original RAZR...
The New DROID RAZR - Android Smartphone - Ultra-Thin - KEVLAR Strong - SPECS - Motorola Mobility, Inc. USA

I agree with you, but a larger battery 60 days after introduction is not new technology, and it means it was on the drawing board, but held back for monetary reasons. And thats what pisses me off.
