Razr questions answered

Many questions re: Razr - so here's an attempt at answering some of them


1) There is a hardware button push combination that simulates a "battery pull" on the device. No need to worry about getting stuck in a situation where you can't force the hard reboot.

2) THIS was the device I was referring to a while back as being VZW's key product. It's also a droid branded product, so it gets the extra VZW push and marketing spend.

3) Bootloaders - i think this question has been beaten to death already.

4) The battery life isn't compromised by the phone size. It's still a large battery. I wouldn't recommend pulling it out to try to tinker with it. Motorola will have a solution for extended battery lovers down the road as well.

5) This will be the last touchscreen only droid you'll see this year, so no need to worry about a new one coming out in the next few months.

6) Release date - earlier than you think. (Nov 3rd you ask? Hmm, I say)
 
Yoda, the problem though is the deceptive approach to the chipset, if a 4430. They keep saying it is a 1.2 chipset, but that is operating at the max level of the 4430 and has a 25% slower GPU speed than the real 1.2ghz chip (the 4460). The Droid 3 gets hot enough at 1ghz! A fixed battery with an overclocked chip is asking for issues.

If a 4460, cool, but GSM and others have the Razr listed as a 4430 and the Nexus as a 4460.
 
Hey Yoda, I havent been able to figure out, does the RAZR have the 4 color notification LED on the front like most of the Android phones?

Whatever its running, they benchmarked it and it scored better on a browser benchmark compared to the Bionic.

I dont know if an updated OS would help the browser benchmark that much, dont really know. But I know the Bionic didnt score that high on Rightware Browsermark when they tested it. And it scored up there with the iPhone 4S on that test. So somethings different with this phone vs. the Bionic. I'm guessing its the gpu.
 
My question is WTF is Verizon thinking dropping the Razr and Prime within 12 hours of each other? If the Razr is the "big push" phone why set it up to be upstaged within 12 hours by the Prime launch?

And, when will Razr get ICS?
 
I can only go by what I know. I have the Droid 3 and it gets hot at 1ghz and the battery starts an accelerated dive on life. Browser based Flash video content is a key example. Try one at VZW if you doubt.

IF this is a 4430, the stock speed is 1ghz, so not really a 1.2ghz OMAP -the 4460 is and the 4470 is the 1.5ghz (as I previously thought, but somebody said otherwise).

Using a chips stable OC speed is deceiving. No way to spin, unless TI would kindly give us the efficiency curves for each chip at correlating speeds. My guess is the relationship will have an R square of diddly.

Simply put, if this device has a 4430, it is the same chip as the Droid 3, which is a stock 1ghz chip with a stable OC of 1.2ghz.

VZW isn't pushing the Nexus. That's all Google and Samsung. Now, VZW isn't about to say no to another device that drives customers to their stores - they win as long as you sign up for a new contract or contract extension.

With Droid phones, VZW gets to extend their branding onto the devices as well as keeping other carriers in the US from getting those same devices.

As far as specs go - well, like Apple has shown time and time again, it takes more than specs to make a great phone. Would be curious to see how the additional software pieces (smart rules, motocast, webtop, integration with motoactive) help sell the device.

Someone had asked about the LED - it does have a multicolored LED on the front of the device. I think it can do more than 4 colors even (6 I think. Could be wrong)

I'm apologize for my ignorance, but if it is indeed a 4430 would this be a deal breaker for you knowing what you know? Trying to have all my ducks in a row when deciding between this, the prime or the rezound.

I asked someone from pocketnow.com about it and they also said it's 4430.

it seems anandtech are the only ones saying it's 4460

First of all, I was wrong, since the max recommended speed of the 4430 is 1ghz. OMAP™ 4 Platform - OMAP4430/OMAP4460 Wearing my internal audit hat, this published data would be a "trusted source" so I will use for reference.

Anyway we spin it, the 4430 is a 1ghz chip and not a 1.2ghz chip. Either Moto is using a 4460 or and overclocked 1ghz chip. If a 4430, they are not being honest and playing a clocking game.


If the Razr has a 4460, I suggest the Razr.

If the Razr has a 4430, I suggest waiting a few weeks to see user reports on stability and heat, since media reviews will not have the device long enough to make the call (DX2 is a perfect example of this)

The VZW version of the Nexus could only have 16gb internal and no sd card (there will be two models: 16gb and 32gb). I suggest avoiding the Nexus if 16gb (this would mean only about 10 gb for apps and media)

I do not know much about the Rezound yet. Sorry.
 
Any judgments made about these phones prior to a couple week of them being in users hands and also my own hands would be a bit premature, but I can say that as of now, neither this nor the prime behoove me to use my current available VZ upgrade to dump my DX2. Since the last OTA to 2.3.4 my DX2 is performing extremely well. Nary a hiccup in scrolling, no mp3 stutters. Dont get me wrong, I like what I see of the RAZR, just not sure it's enough upgrade from prelim info.

I wish the DX2 issues were fixed a lot sooner. I like the DX2 (sans all the issues). Droid 3 is nice, but miss the extra display size. It will be interesting to get feedback from users after a few weeks to see if thin, fixed battery and an OC'd 4430 was a good bet for Moto. Sometimes saving money (4430 instead of 4460) does not SAVE you money ;)

Still hoping the 4430 info is wrong, but Yoda has not refuted my concerns.

I agree. Seems the hardware isn't enough of a jump over the DX2 at least from what we know about the hardware of the RAZR. I'm sure it's a nicer phone, but likey not enough so for using my upgrade.
 
As long as VZ doesn't take my unlimited data away by using my available upgrade, this phone is now looking much nicer with the news of the 4460 instead of the 4430 OMAP. I might just jump and even be an early adopter.
 
Hi Guys,

Coming from a Droid Eris user ( yes, it still is alive ) can you tell me what the major issues are from the Heat? Does it make the phone un-usable? Does it happen everytime you make a call for a long time or surf the web? Is it big roadblock?

Heat can cause reboots, lock ups, lag, battery drain, etc. Will not know if this device will have those issues until released and some time to get the new device luv out of peoples minds.

I would wait for some real world testing before asking this question. Once the device gets in the hands of the consumer you will get a better idea of potential heat or any other types of issues. Simply lookiing at the droid 3 is not indicative of any problems the RAZR may experience.
 
What is the scoop regarding the bootloader? I'm a big cyanogenmod fan and I thought the nexus would be a no brainer, but the razr is looking too good.

I think I will wait until these phones come out so I can get a better idea of the specifics.

Btw, also a former eris owner.
 
So Yoda do we know the exact date of this Razr yet?
I am biting my lip waiting for this phone, I return the Bionic on my last day cause I heard of the Razr coming out in Nov. I hope somebody can give me the exact date, I hate waiting. LOL
