I'm afraid I'll brick my phone.

I've seen so many threads arguing as to whether you can upgrade from 2.3.1 directly to 2.3.4, or 2.3.3 or not. My gut tells me to wait.

I'm not very technically adept. I've read all these posts about manually updating, and I don't have the slightest idea what any of you much smarter people are talking about! Do you hook your phone up to your pc or what?

Anyway, thanks again, and congratulations on your new update!

There are step by step guides that show you every step of the way. Honestly it is very simple. Nerd or not.

So basically if you own a Nexus One or Nexus S you will receive the update no matter what Gingerbread version you are on. Idk if you have a Twitter account but you might want to get one. XDA, Android blog sites, & Twitter (if you follow the Android stuff) answer more then half the questions you think of without you even asking because the information is just there. You can also google it. I will update again with the instructions.

This is for GRI40 (look under about phone & build number at the very bottom to verify)
Update: Download the file from Google right here (http://v3.lscache3.c.android.client...749.signed-soju-GRJ22-from-GRI40.a14a2dd0.zip)

Place it on the root of your internal storage (meaning plug it to your pc, open the directory & that's the root). Don't put it in any folder that's in there. Just put it by itself like the rest. You shouldn't have much on there as I can tell since your asking how to do this.

Turn your phone off.

Reboot into the bootloader by holding volume up and power button to power back on

Use the volume buttons to choose "recovery" from the list, and select it with the power button

When you see the triangle on your screen, hold power and then press volume up and you'll have a list of options, choose the file (the file you just put on your phone) to update. Let it do it's thing & your done.
 
I am also curious.... I am new to Android, just visiting actually while I wait for my next BB, anyway I am a Mac user and haven't yet sorted out what if any way there is to sync to update on my mac. I have 4 macs and no PCs and there isn't even a hey use a friend's PC as I just moved to a new city.

Anyway I bought a Nexus S that is on 2.3.1 and I bet there is something in the few updates I don't have but nothing is coming in ota.

Anyway new to Android and just trying to see whats what.

Thanks for the very detailed instructions, but I'm on version 2.3.1. I think your instructions are for updating from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4?

I have another question. At what point in the process do you disconnect your phone from your PC?

Google said on Twitter that they will be rolling it out over the next few weeks. I'm still on 2.3.1 but have no issues so I can wait.

It doesn't matter if you have 2.3.1 at present, it will jump to 2.3.4 no problem.

Connect your phone to your PC via usb and on the phone select 'usb storage on'.

Copy to file into the root (main) folder and follow the instructions posted above or below. *you can disconnect your phone now*.


Shut down and reboot into the bootloader by holding volume up and powering back on.

Use the volume buttons to choose

That's not true. For updating manually, you need to have the right update file for the version you're coming from. The one linked to previously in this thread is for updating from GRI40, aka 2.3.3, only.

Now if someone tried to update with that file from 2.3.1, it wouldn't hurt anything. It'll just say something like "Version Confirmation Failed" and not install the update.

Thanks! Can I update from 2.3.1 to 2.3.3? and if so, where would I find the update file? .......And then use the above mentioned file to update from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4?

I'll go find the 2.3.3 manual update for you so you can do the update I first showed you. When you do update to to 2.3.3, make sure it says GRI40 under build number in your phone. It should though once your on 2.3.3. Unless you have a At&t Nexus S. I'll update in a few minutes.

Update: This is to get you from 2.3.1 to 2.3.3 (when your done with this look under About phone>Build Number to see if its GRI40. If so, do the one I posted for 2.3.4)

Step 1: Download the Gingerbread update file from this link. (go to this site and the zip is in the first step. Click on the word "link" highlighted in blue. I couldn't post it here because it began to download when I opened the page.)http://www.thereaderseye.com/manually-install-android-2.3.3-gingerbread-on-nexus-s-now-guide/

Step 2: Make sure the file’s name is update.zip, rename it if you have to. When you rename it, just rename it "update". the zip part is the extension. Some people mistakenly name it update.zip.zip

Step 3: Copy the update.zip file in the root of your Nexus S’s storage, it shouldn’t be inside any folder. Once you put it on your root you can unplug your device. Turn your device off.

Step 4: Boot your Nexus S into the bootloader. This can be done by holding the volume up key and power button.

Step 5: Once you’re in the bootloader, use the volume keys to navigate to “recovery” and use the power button to confirm your action.

Step 6: At this point you’ll see a warning on the screen, hold down the power button and press the volume up button.

Step 7: You will be presented with a new menu, from there select “apply update from /sdcard” and then choose update.zip. (the file you just put on)

Step 8: Bam your done. Select “reboot system now” once everything is done and you’ll be presented with Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread on your Nexus S.

If you catch on, you will notice that the 2.3.4 manual update is the same process. Only thing is your flashing a newer version. I really hope this helps.
 
Thank you to "czechplatik", "AndroidifyMe", and "quantumrand" for all your great help and advice on manually updating my nexus s to the current version.

I haven't done it yet, but have decided to attempt it later this evening or tomorrow night. I really appreciate all of the effort you guys put in to get me this step by step information on how to do it. I'll definitely let you all know how it works out, or if I get stuck.
