Root Re-ROM'ing my rooted Desire....help needed...

I've not used my rooted (uNrevoked) Desire for a while but I want to get it ready for use in case my wife's phone falls over.

The problem is, it's so long ago that I did all the rooting etc that I can't remember what the correct procedure is!?!? :confused:

My Desire has a 16GB Micro SD Card in it with 1GB of it `gparted` with (I think) an ext3 partition. (having looked at the SD card in disk management on my PC, the partition is still there!)

Anyway, I've downloaded a Sense 3.5 ROM called RunnymedeMod007 as it states it supports A2SD+ (which from memory lets the phone use my ext3 partition to install apps etc to - is this correct?) and put the zip file onto my SD card.

I've then booted into recovery and done the following:
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- Wipe Dalvik Cache (in advanced)

I've then selected to install the ROM from the list and away it went.

The ROM appears to have installed OK but on the first boot I got the message saying that the device was low on space and I had to choose a few app's to uninstall!?!? - Does this mean the A2SD+ hasn't worked??

Anyway as I said, a lot of this was trial and error and from my (bad) memory! Can anyone tell me where I went wrong as surely a fresh ROM install should have plenty of room to install on the 1GB partition!?!?!?

ps. if anyone can recommend me a good, stable (ideally Sense based) ROM that is suitable for me I'm all ears!

Teppics sense ROM I hear is the best stable sense ROM.

Sounds like you're doing everything fine, just need to activate the a2sd, I've had to do this in a few ROMs but I can never remember the commands.

I know you'll need terminal emulator for a start, but you'll need to look up the commands, they're something like Su (press enter)
A2sd cached

I doubt that it, but something along those lines.

Also, to check the partition download quick system info pro from the Market.

I've no problem doing this after a ROM has been installed but the "low on space" message came up on first boot - even before I'd got to the phones "desktop" - surely a Desire ROM should "fit" on a Desire's internal memory even if nothing else will!?!?
 
OK, now I'm a little worried I've done something seriously wrong....

I wondered if that ROM was the problem and so tried another (BlissMod007) and it just froze on the o2 splash screen so I've tried going back to the Runnymede one and the same has happened!

Booted into recovery, did the above "wipes" and clicked to install the mod which it did - rebooted the phone and it's been stuck on the boot screen for over half an hour!?!?! :eek:

Somebody please tell me this is fixable!!! :confused:
 
Runnymede ROMS are much bigger than desire ROMs and they need the EXT partition for part of the ROM too. Just make sure your EXT partition is big enough. Should say in the thread.

It says:

- STOCK hboot: Wiped ext2, 3 or 4 partition (for APP2SD), 512+ MB - Dalvik-Cache moved on the first boot on the SD-Ext

My ext3 partition is 1GB so should have been enough!?!?! :confused:

Either way, I cant seem to get anything working now (as per my above post) - what is the best way to just start fresh??
 
The installer for Runnymede is "intelligent" and should detect you have stock Hboot but it may not be doing.

You shouldnt run out of space if you're on teh stock hboot and your ext partition is empty.

This rom is designed for a much more powerful phone so I wouldnt recommend it necessarily. If you want something stanble go for a Desire based Sense rom or at most a desire HD based rom...

Edit> To start fresh, wipe data is the only real thing to do.
 
This is a bit weird, when I click on "wipe data/factory reset" it formats the "DATA:" and "CACHE:" but when it gets to "SDEXT:" it says "No app2sd partition found. Skipping format of /sd-ext."

I'm assuming that the ext3 partition has gone pear-shaped somewhere??

*edit*

Managed to install the AceSMod007 without any errors but there is no lockscreen (just have to push the middle button a couple of times to get past the opening screen) and when I go into "SD & Phone Storage" it says:

Available on Ext partition - 0.00B

I'm assuming this is conclusive proof that the ext partition has definitely gone pear-shaped??
 
Yes indeed. Many a2sd+ roms wont boot without it. Some will however.

Is Runymede the one that states you must have 4EXT recovery to work too?

Anyways, as I said, I wouldnt use that rom if stability is your aim.
 
According to the page on XDA, Runnymede requires ext 2, 3 or 4 but if its not a stable ROM then I don't think I'll bother anyway!

All I need is something usable, stable and supports A2SD as the biggest problem I ever found with my Desire was the lack of install space!

I'll re-gparted my SD card when I get home and try it again with the AcesMod I think - I did try to look at the Teppik stock GB ROM but the link to the actual ROM doesn't appear to be working and it also recommends flashing the radio which is something I've never tried (and don't want to if I can avoid it!)

Sorry, not EXT as in EXT 2, 3 or 4 (Extended file system)...

I mean 4EXT Recovery (As opposed to Clockworkmod recovery)
 
Hmmmm, my ext3 partition seems to have vanished - when I checked the SD card last night it definitely showed the 1GB partition after the main part when viewed within disk management in Windows 7 but when I look now all it shows is the one partition:

I must have formatted the whole card when I selected "wipe cache partition"???? - Is this right? For some reason I thought it just formatted the main storage part of the card!

If the above is correct, am I right in thinking that between ROM's I only need to do "wipe data/factory reset" and "Wipe Dalvik Cache" and leave the "wipe cache partition" part alone - or is it something else I've done without realising??
 
You should check in Gparted really. Im surprised windows disk management picked up the partition as usually it can only pick up the first partition on an SD card / USB stick.

Also, Android usually only mounts the FAT 32 partition, its recovery you would mount in to show both.

Wipe data / factory reset does both the other things you mentioned.

I'll check in Gparted when I get home just to make sure but I'm absolutely certain that the 1GB partition showed up when I put the SD card into a card reader on my laptop last night (same process I've used on my work's PC today to see the above pic!)

Sorry if I'm being dense but of the 3 options I selected in recovery, should any of them have wiped my ext3 partition?? (ie. does selecting "wipe cache partition" delete the ext3 partition?)
 
I have done wipes on extra partition multiple times before. This is usually needed to install new Rom. This has never deleted the whole partition.
 
Just wanted to say thanks to all for the advice on this - managed to re-"gpart" my SD card last night and got the AcesMod installed and working OK so I'm good to go! :)

I'd forgotten how much fun it was to have a play about with ROM's! :D
 
OK, here's a quick question - should a factory reset from within the phone delete the ext3 partition on the SD card????

I've been using the phone as a temporary replacement for my wife's phone and once she was done with it I wanted to delete her google account but when I tried to remove it, it told me that the only way to get rid was to do a factory reset - trouble is, when I went back into the phone after the reset it had lost the 1GB ext3 partition!?!?!? :confused:
 
Basically my wife didn't need the phone any longer so I did a factory reset do get rid of her Google account details but when it rebooted, the "ring" that you pull up to unlock the phone had disappeared so I wondered what was wrong and thought I'd just reinstall the Acesmod from fresh.
When I went into recovery and selected the "wipe data/factory reset" option and when it got to the ext partition it said it had bypassed it as it couldnt be found so I then booted my PC with Gparted and had a look at the SD card and there was no sign of the ext3 partition!?!?!?

I honestly cant think of anything else that I did that could have got rid of it??

Dunno, but if its gone, its gone. Format of SD card would have done it but if you didnt do that, some sort of corruption?

Problem is theres no way to find out for sure.
