Help Reached 500Mb Data Limit - Need Help Please

Hi Everyone
I hope someone can help me here, somehow i have managed to reach my 500mb monthly limit on O2. Not too sure how i have managed this but i have now switched off Packet Data and am just using wifi. Interestingly enough, i have downloaded a data app and in 3 or 4 days i have managed to rack up 200.9Mb of data (all wifi)
98.5 Email is the biggest offender here but i am not too sure how to reduce this, obviously i want email to refresh as often as possible but i have a feeling it is doing a lot more than just checking for email.
Is there a way for it to just check for email when it is on wifi?
Anyone got any tips for how to reduce this data issue?
Thanks
Lee

Anyone know how to reduce the stock email using loads of data?

Since Saturday i have managed to eat 111Mb (allbeit on wifi) but i am sure that i have a setting wrong on it but for the life of me dont know what it is.

What i would like to do is get a message to say that i have a new email, as soon as possible but i do not know how to do this, also i am not too sure what the sync levels are ie 1 day, 3 days, 1 week etc does one day mean that it downloads each email every time it syncs?

What i thought it did was just download each email as i get it.

ALso, in Accounts and Sync (in settings) what does Background data and AUto Sync mean in data terms.

I am really at a loss as to why my data is so high. This month i did some trips using Co-Pilot so that might have used a fair bit of data (2 times a day for about an hour)

Help

I have "3G Watchdog Pro" to monitormy usage, its really good app. There is a free version which i highly recommend but this app is well worth the

co pilot shouldnt have used much at all, the maps are stored on your phone. As far as im aware it only uses a tiny bit of data to help get a gps fix. How often are you syncing your email? i think be default it is set up as every 15 mins. If you dont need it then change it to once a day.

What does syncing email actually mean? I guess that this is something totally different to Email Check Frequency?
Also, what exactly is a Premium Account on email.
I am proper confused with all of this :)

i getting a bit worried about this now

today my email has done 39.1Mb

Does anyone know the settings to use so that this is not so high, i am obviously doing something wrong here

What mail are you using? Why not try a different email program?

I am using the stock one too, but my data usage for email is barely nothing. There are plenty of email apps in the market. Just choose one that gets good reviews and fits your needs.

I've heard good things about K-9 Mail.

Using K9 Mail now

Bit of a faff to get everything set up

Still a bit unsure of the settings though and exactly what they mean as far as data is concerned

Sync Messages from - any time (no limit)
Fetch Messages up to - 2Mb
Folder Poll frequency - Every 15 minutes

I guess that the poll one is when it is checking for NEW messages and it will pull anything up to 2mb but i still am unsure on the Sync Messages from bit. Anyone know a definive answer on this one?

I have noticed that K9 seems to use less data so only time will tell on this one

Thanks

Not good, i downloaded K9 and set up my 4 email accounts using this (not sure if this might be the issue here)

So far I have managed to get (use) 113Mb since yesterday morning which is pretty much the same as what happened using the stock email.

How much data does everyone else chew up using email?

I would like to be informed of any new emails as soon as possible but i cannot see this using loads of data (unless i get a gazillion new emails, which i havent).

I have removed 3 of the email addresses so that i just have the one now and going to see what happens now.

It is set up as follows:
Sync Messages from the last 2 days (i still do not know what this does in data terms ie does it download every email from the last 2 days? when?)
Fetch messages up to 2mb (dont ever get many this size - mostly are way way under half a meg
Folder Poll Frequency Every 15 Minutes (i guess this looks and downloads any new ones every 15 mins)

This is really starting to worry me, looks like the stock client is good enough and there is a setting somewhere which is causing all this data drain and it is definately email based but no idea what settings to use.

Would it be an idea to set up both clients to look at one mailbox and see what happens?

I am concerned that everytime i set one up i get the drain (one time only) but then going forward it should be fine - its the sync thing that i do not understand

The sync message just means to tell the app to show emails from how many days ago. I don't understand why the emails will take up so much of your data. I am using the Email Widget that came with the phone.

Usually the attachments are not automatically downloaded either. Have to go into the mail and download. So don't see where it is coming from. Are you using any app that can tell you what is chewing up the data? Like 3G watchdog pro which tells you which individual apps uses how much data.

Cheers

Checked 3G watchdog Pro. Received something like 10 emails today and total data usage for email is just 200kb.

Yeah something very wierd has been happening and thats for sure

It seems to have calmed down now though which is good.

When i downloaded K9 i got 114.2Mb on day one (Tuesday) which was consistant with what i had been seeing before. I decided to remove this one and go back to the stock email client which i preferred and got 80.8Mb on day one (Wednesday).

Current stats are 82.7Mb on the old client which means i have used 1.9Mb in two days which is about right. So i guess it is fixed now. No idea what the problem was though however when i set these up again i set each account up as a Premium account.

This morning however i was looking at the phone and saw that i had almost run out of space so i went into the file manager and found 2 files in Gameloft Games at 2.2Gb each so i deleted these. I now have more space, maybe this was something to do with it.

This did happen once before ie i got an email from O2 saying that i was close to my 500Mb limit (300Mb i think was where i was at) but i didnt get another so i forgot about it. So i guess the same thing has happened in the past.

Going forward i will have to keep a better eye on this one.

One thing i have also noticed (and this happened shortly after i got the phone) is that when i get an email notification and i go into the email and delete the email, sometimes i get the notification again but when i go to look it is gone. Wierd

The gameloft folder is for your gameloft data files. If you have download any gameloft games, the bulk of the data is kept there. Downloading the data files is usually through wifi and not through emails.

You sure you want to delete those?

How did you manage to run out of space?

No idea how i ran out of space, last time i checked i had about 8gb and somehow this Gameloft thing pushed it to the limit. Deleted it anyway because i only have one game on it
This wasnt why i reached the DL limit though, that was specifically email.

Just got my SGS2, and love every minute of it - Apart from battery life, but looking at updating to 2.3.5
Regarding you data usage, switch to Giffgaff, Runs off 02, A tenner a month gets you 250 any network mins, unlimited any network texts, and unlimited data.
There is no way you can stick to 500mb with any smart phone let alone the all singing all dancing S2.
