Help Read and followed FAQ to transfer DVD

I read the FAQ as someone suggested on how to transfer a DVD to the Captivate. Everything went as per the instructions, but the phone won't play the MP4 file. I either get an error that it's an unsupported file type, or simply "Sorry, this file cannot be played". There is no explanation. I can and have played WMV files, so is there a reason that MP4 is preferrable for Captivate?
