reading external hard drive

how can i attach an external hard drive to my motorola droid turbo. I have the proper connection cable. do i have to root the device? please tell me no that i can do it a different way.

What device are you trying to connect and what is the cable that you have?

(I'm using an OTG card reader with a 64GB SD card. An OTG cable will allow you to use any USB plug in memory memoru stick.)

I have a hard drive that is self powered via ac plug. i tried to connect to my Motorloa droid turbo and mount the drive it wouldnt work gave up guess phone needs to be rooted. i have not tried my samsung galaxy tablet 4 though maybe better luck.

It shouldn't have to be rooted - you can connect to flash drives with an OTC cable just fine - but, if the drive isn't formatted as a FAT32, it probably won't be able to be mounted.
