"Real Time" (Live) Satellite GPS on Smartphone???

OK, I'm hesitant to ask about this so be nice :o
A few weeks ago, one of my husband's employees showed
everyone in the truck a GPS satellite image of the truck and trailer
driving down the road. DH said he would have never believed it if he hadn't seen it. I've Googled till I'm blue in the face and can't find anything like. The only thing I know about this phone is that it's a "pre-paid" smartphone from WalMart. Does anyone know of a smartphone app that can actually see you in real time (LIVE) as you're driving down the road? I would call the guy and ask him but he no longer works for us and wasn't too happy about being let go :o
Thanks,
Monica/Droid Razr

Was this image of a arrow representing the vehicle or of the actual vehicle?

Google Navigation can do the former with ease by using images captured by its satellites in times past. However grabbing a live action view (ala many scenes you see on various movies where Navy Seals attack terrorist bases in Iraq) is probably not possible!

Rachel, it was the actual truck and trailer and it was moving. His Garmin and my built-in Nav system in my car show what you're talking about. At first I thought he was pulling my leg but he's dead serious and so are the other two guys that saw it. A white truck, black trailer driving down the road they were actually on. I'm having a hard time believing it too but finally got over being too embarrassed to ask LOL

I'm having a hard time believing that myself. For this to be possible it sounds like he'd need to have a satellite (or other type of high atmospheric type devce) trained on his vehicle and then be able to receive this feed in real time.

Google et al have a hard enough time with images at the best of times (one tile taken in Summer, the next in Winter) so I'm not so sure that even they could perform such a feat (although I'm sure they'd love to!)

That's definitely high-end military capability. I seriously doubt it is available for commercial use. Either your friend was putting you on somehow, or you were seeing a custom icon overlaid on a GPS application.

Thanks for all the answers. I'm stumped. So is DH now. I believe he saw what he said he saw but I can't find anything on line to suggest it's even possible (with civilians). Sure wish the guy still worked for us so I could go straight to the source!

They were on a country road. Very likely there were no other cars but I haven't asked him nor did he mention it. I'll find out tho.

I have seen the same app. not even sure what kind of phone it was on. It was live and no joke!! Really want it !! Now am frustrated because I cant find out any more info. !!!???

No offense, but I would have to see it myself to believe it.

Logistically, you are talking about dozens/hundreds/thousands of satellites i locked synchronous orbit and dedicated to each person using this device/software. One satellite per person, since it was following them. Even if you shared a pool of satellites based on location and current usage - still logistically not feasible.

If you want a conspiracy twist......personal drone???

Definitely bogus. There are no real time satellite feeds except military, and those satellites are tasked to specific missions.

A personal drone is a possibility, although highly unlikely.

This one does it: you get ID from the app and can track in later on app's site in real time.
SeeMe GPS Tracker

That's looks like glympse or navigation. A map drawing.

"it was the actual truck and trailer and it was moving" gives me the impression that the application in reference was a real time live satellite video feed.

Had to check the date of the OP lol thought it was a joke :)
Bit off topic but i used google street view the other day, directed it up my street, pointed it in my window and waved at myself. Then i pointed my phone out the window, caused a video feedback loop and google exploded!

Real time tracking is very much possible. We were regularly using it for surveillance. But I doubt it being available for civil use.
