Root Really Bad Battery Drain

Shmooey

Well-Known Member
Alright so when my phones screen is off the battery barely drains at all but when i actually goto use it (listen to music, go on facebook, text people, etc.) i get crazy battery drain and i have nooo idea why

A custom kernel would be my first suggestion. I've been out of the OG game for too long to make a sense kernel suggestion. Hopefully mikestony can chime in, I see he thanked one of my earlier posts :)

My question would be, how long is the screen on?
As Rxpert stated, the screen will suck up alot of juice if it is on for a long time.

Edit: and what is "crazy battery drain"? to you. I mean like, does it kill the battery in 3 hours? or....:)

i guess i was a little vague lol but what i mean by crazy battery drain is say i could try to check facebook or text someone and itll drain my battery like 10% in only 1 or 2 minutes my screen isnt usually on, i have it set to turn off after 30 seconds and lately the only things ive actually been using my phone for is to either text people, listen to music, or check facebook and it just seems to be draining my battery waaay faster than it should be

Can you take a screenshot of your battery graph?

Try downloading either gsam battery monitor or betterbatterystats. They can help you pin down if any apps are causing the drain.

I'm assuming since your battery isnt draining when the screen is off that's not the problem though

How long have you been on this rom? And I assume the kernel is the one that came with the rom?
If you have been on the rom for only a couple days, give it more time for the kernel to settle in.
After that, if the battery life still stinks, then either A: flash another kernel, or B:flash another rom. Not all rom/kernel combos act the same on different phones.
What other roms have you tried?

ive been on this rom for about a week and a half and im on the kernel that came with the rom, the only other rom ive tried is MikG's 3.11, and about the screenshot of the battery graph, i have no idea how to put a picture on here ._.

When you flashed the ROM did you wipe cache/dalvik before and after, did you wipe the data/system prior to flashing??
Are you using an RA based recovery or ClockWorkMod?

I would suggest switching kernel to one of classic/underworld. There are others, anthrax or lionfish for example.

i wiped the dalvik cache/cache b4 but not after and i did wipe the data/system aaand im using an ra based recovery

nope i started from scratch on this rom, the batterys fine when im not really using my phone but once i do anything it just drains it alot

well sort of, in the morning, i take it off the charger (100% charge) get on the bus and listen to music for about 30 minutes and when i get off and look at my phone its gone done about 15-20%

HTC stock design is to have it basically not charge much past 90% so it will show 100% but basically drop almost immediately to 90% if you run a kernel with SBC you will not see this drop.

So the kernel helped a bit and then i switched batteries and it helped a looot so ya with the combination of the kernel + the new battery my phones life is awesome

non sbc because i dont quite know what sbc is or how to use it

It's superior battery charging or something like that. As mentioned earlier HTC phones are made to only charge around 90%capacity. SBC ensures you get as close to a true 100%charge basically. Therefore even longer battery life.

And it will do it automatically. You need not do anything special or extra.

Edit: let me add to this...you will notice this sbc effect after a night of charging.
When you take the phone off of the charger, it will remain at 100% alot longer than if you were using a non-sbc kernel.
Let me also add, that in order for sbc to take effect, after fully charged, while still plugged in, it will take another 1-2 hours for the sbc to kick in.
In other words, if you charge until the green light comes on and you unplug it, your voltage will drop like it would normally. If you charge until the green light comes on, then leave it plugged in for another 1-2 hours, then unplug it, you will remain at 100% for a longer period of time.

I can attest to that fact as I have used the Mason G sbc kernel while on Decks Reloaded rom.
It was very nice.

sbc (superior battery charging):this is a type of trickle charging that is slower in its charge and is best done overnight. it is supposed to prevent that initial 10% drop off charge. the idea is that as the voltage is pushed into the battery while charging very slowly, the battery will stay cool. by keeping the battery cool you will avoid plating where lithium ions are deposited on the anode of the battery in metallic form vs the ionic form. once lithium is metallic, it can no longer transfer electricity so obviously you want to avoid plating as much as possible.

it also supposed to charge the battery past its normal 100%. your battery indicator has a certain value for what it deems to be 100%. however the sbc charge allows the battery to charge past that point. there was concern that the sbc kernel will overcharge the battery and thus kill the life of the battery and or it can cause it to explode. now in the past, if you look around the net, you will see that people were concerned for their phones exploding due to the use of sbc kernels. though there were a few cases (supposedly) of exploding phones early on, there has not been any reported that i know of since. and yes sbc kernels may degrade your battery down faster then non sbc kernels. however, i think that the trade off of getting better battery life is better then having a battery last longer. batteries are cheap these days anyways.
