Help really stupid question, but any help would be appreciated!

Hi Everyone, this is such a dumb question, but I got my android Incredible two days ago, and I SERIOUSLY can't figure out how to turn it off?!?! I try to hit the top left hand button (which makes the screen go black) but I will still recieve calls, etceterca.

Hold down the lock button on the top left that you pushed, a screen will pop up and then you press the option to "power off".
