So we either use this or google navigation app? Or does this tie in with google navigation?

Of course you can use the application by leaving it in background while using Google Navigation.
When close to a speedcam or traffic ligth you'll be warned by a popup if you uncheck the "Bring to front" preference. When checked, the application is restored to the front instead of a simple popup containing speed limit, distance and side of the event.

The background service should stop if you select "Menu" button then "Exit" and if you answer "Yes" to the question "Stop Real Time Traffic Service?".

If it's not the case please send me logs using "Log Collector" (available on the market) rigth after you select "Yes" button.
