lets be honest here. you DON'T need a superphone. yeah, its cool and nice to have, but you don't NEED it.

if you really want it, you can always get a job and buy your own. just a thought

Yea, they aren't a necessity, but they are certainly helpful.

in case it wasnt mentioned before, and sorry if it was, but there are apps that let you record notes. you could use that not only for taking notes (much faster imo) but also for recording lectures to be able to play them back at a later date.

sure you could just get a cheap ass voice recorder and do the same thing, but this would let you organize so much more than just notes.

I just graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from Illinois Institute of Technology. Just to clarify, IIT is requiring all incoming freshman to own/use iPads in class. The iPads are being used as part of the curriculum and if the iPads are lost/damaged/stolen the student is required to replace it.

The argument for using the X as a calculator replacement is not valid. My professors would have failed me on sight if we were seen using a wifi enabled device during an exam.

I did not use a smart phone throughout college, but a few years in I did pick up an itouch which really was the best of both worlds since I did not have to foot a monthly bill and my entire campus has wifi coverage anyway.

Depending on your major, maybe you could use if for running some self created apps? At IIT we did a bit of this for the iphone.
