Help Reasons to return the GNex

OK, before everyone goes ballistic and disagrees with this post, this is strictly my observations over 4 days with the GNex. I do understand it is new and updates will come. However, if it is hardware related, there are no updates.

  1. Poor signal strength: My office mate has a Rezound that gets full bars on 4G and speeds 2x of the GNex. This was run on Speedtest.net to Wilson, NC Greenlight. He sees speeds at 19-22Mbps down and 10-12Mbps up. My GNex got 10Mbps or less and ~5Mbps up. At another location at the mall, the GNex could not get a 4G signal and the Rezound had all but 1 bar. No way to test.
  2. Notifications/Ringer/Vibrate: I have had family and friends calling me on my home line asking where I am. The GNex does not have a loud enough ringer or significant vibrate to alert me to an incoming call or message. The only time I have actually received a call was in my car through Sync. The radio shuts off and the speakers in the car ring.

These 2 issues are critical in a phone. #1 I could live with if there was a statement that it is a software issue that is being corrected. If it is hardware related, there is no fix and I am left with it for 2 years. #2 is absolutely unacceptable. If I cannot be notified of a call, then it is absolutely useless.

I will be spending a lot of time today testing the phone to see if there is a way to adjust settings further. If not, then this is going back in Monday for the Rezound or iPhone 4S.

This.

I don't think I'm bound to return it for this reason, but I certainly understand those who would because it is definitely weak on both fronts.

hmmmmm

I do not have 4G in my area so i cannot comment on that issue.
I was at work Friday and had no data signal at all :(
I called VZW tech support and explained my issue. I have no idea if and or what they did but went to work Saturday and had GREAT connectivity.

I agree 100% on the sound issue but d/loaded volume+ and it made the changes i wanted. Also put my own ringtones and notification tone on the phone and it is 100% acceptable to me now :)

BTW........for those that try Volume+ and see no difference, you must go into settings and music effects and choose volume+.

Just saying......................

Is this for paid app version?

I loaded volume+ as well, and it works great. I have the free version and set it to +4.

For those of you that are skeptical, I suggest downloading the free version, playing a song, and then going into volume+ and adjusting the level between 0 and +4.

If +4 isn't loud enough for you, the pro version does +7.

Does t improve vibration? I have had 6 missed calls on this phone through the weekend now because I have no clue it is ringing?

For what it's worth, when I was at Best Buy Mobile the salesman was talking up the Rezound's antenna design as the best out there. Said it had better connection strength than any other phone. So could be hardware related, at least partly.

Can someone using volume+ break it down for me. Lol
I dont see the setting to increase the max volume on Gnex.
I only see the sliders for all the sound functions for there normal min/ max.
Thanks

I don't understand how people are missing calls. Are you in a completely different room? Because I hear the notification when I get a text or call. Yeah the vibrate is weak but when I had the droid x, at first it was very quiet and then it improved through an update and was very loud. I used my phone as an alarm and the droid x was so quiet compared to my inc. I am sure they will be able to increase it somewhat or there are plenty of apps out there.

In the past different kernels have been known to help reception. I think people are being way too fast to return these. Its a brand new OS on a brand new phone. Being a nexus phone there will be a lot of support and fixes out for it

#1 is very interesting, I only get 2 bars for LTE in my house and I only get about 10mb down also, I assumed it was because verizon hadn't expanded their network in my area completely. If other LTE phones can get the full speed in the same area that is very frustrating.

At least hold out untill your return date .

How about the landscape to portrait rotation? An update sure to fix it i guess

I have installed volume+. It helps, but slightly. I have concluded, that this is not a phone for the pocket. It must be in a belt holster.

As for the connection speeds, I hope it is a software issue. The major problem is any indication that it is. I have no issue waiting for a software fix. However, waiting for it and it not being the solution negates the return date on the phone.

2. Install Volume+

Keep your Nexus. Most of it's issues can and will be fixed by software updates, which you won't have to wait an eternity for since they come directly from Google.

It is not just an apparent signal interpretation issue, since people are losing 3g and 4g in areas their replaced phones were not. Some reviews mention this and people that bought the phone. If in a good to great signal area, no problems.

I do agree though with the post to hold off returning until near the return date, since there is a chance an update could fix it. The issue would be if can not be fixed via software.

My phones been awesome. Yeah the battery was bad at first like every other phone I've owned. Got 17 hours out of it yesterday. Signal has been great. Only bad thing is phone is not recognizing contact phone numbers that I include*82 with to unblock my #. Ideas? Otherwise I love it coming from thunderbolt which I also loved.
