Help Reassigning keys on the Swype keyboard

Is there a way to reassign the keys on the Swype Keyboard. I've been to the Swype site and tried Google, with no success. I love using Swype, but why the hell did they put that obnoxious smiley face emoticon right next to the period? I use the period a lot, I never intentionally use the smiley face. Is there a way to put something else there or even deactivate the key?
Thanks.
Matt

I'm sorry, but where is the smiley key in Swype? I've been using Swype since I got my phone last month and I don't have a smiley key.

When I click to text, the bottom line on my keyboard is- the Swype key, the SYM key, comma, space, period and a key that has :-). Needless to say, with fat fingers, it is very ease to change the tone of a sentence from something meaningful to something snarky. Not real good when you want to get a point across. I would rather put a blank key there.

That's weird, my phone doesn't have that key. After the period I have a carriage return key. I wish I had the smiley key instead.

I do see your point though as to how it could have adverse effects on a serious text. :)

I don't know why this made me laugh, but ... no smiley character for me, either. So perhaps that's good news for OP, maybe there is a way to get a version without it?
