Help Recieving calls problem

I'm about to trash this phone and go with at&t. For the last few days, in the mornings, calls go straight to voicemail. My phone will not function right until I make an outgoing call, then all of a sudden I'll get voicemail notafications and text messages. Its rooted with the xtrsense rom. It's been working fine with root for about 6 months or so, it just started doing this crap recently. I called verizon and they told me to do the *228 and update my roaming, I did it, and it still didn't fix it.

The most obvious answer is that something has changed. An app was updated, a new app added, something along those lines. So, can you think of anything that changed just before the problem started?
You might try flashing a new ROM, or reflashing the existing one.

Let's see, you buy a phone made by HTC, root it, install new ROM, all is fine for months, something goes wrong, and the way to fix it is leave VZW and go to AT&T. Just curious why you feel this is VZW's fault?

Like mhotovec suggested, it's probably do to a new or updated app, or changed settings.

You may have the 50% signal bug. Settings > about > battery status > Battery use. If Cell Standby greater than ~40% you probably have the bug. Two fixes.

#1. dial *#*#4636#*#* > Phone Information > scroll down > set preferred Network to CDMA auto (PRL), if already set, set to GSM/CDMA and back to CDMA auto (PRL) then exit. Watch you battery stats and the standby % should go down. You have to do this each time you reboot your phone. Not a problem for me. I never reboot.

#2. Airplane Mode trick... turn phone on airplane mode and then off airplane mode.

Another option you may want to consider if not already is to change your slot cycle index. This is how frequently your phone pings the towers. ##778 > Edit Mode > p/w 000000 > Modem settings > change slot cycle to 0 or 1.

Good luck

and btw... going to AT&T is not going to fix your call problems. They were recently rated the worst cell service among carriers.

I did a factory reset, the airplane mode trick, Changed the slot cycle, and the *#*#4636#*#*. Still doing the same stuff.

I haven't used xtrSENSE for a while, but isn't there a setting under call settings to force all calls to voicemail? Did you go through settings->call settings to make sure that everything is set correctly?

The cell standby is about 22% and time without a signal is 0% Last time I rebooted was yesterday, but it's saying time on is 4h26m, which equals to about the time I made my first outgoing call this morning, it's 1215pm now, that would put it at about 745 am or so.

Ok, I went from xtrsense 4.6 to 4.6.5 Still the same crap. I don't get it, I didn't change any settings, even with no market apps installed, it doesn't work right.

Is there anything else that can be done to fix this? I can't pay for another phone out of contract right now, but I HAVE to have a working phone, I don't have a land line, this is my only phone.

Here is what I would do: install the Flashback 2.1 ROM to unroot the phone and bring it to Verizon Wireless to see if it is a hardware problem, or it is merely programmed incorrectly. If it is and you are out of the warranty or something, perhaps they will let you renew your contract at upgrade prices and get a different handset.

Well, it still didn't work this morning, so I called back the tech line, and talked to a 'level 2' tech. I told them it was rooted, and the problem I was having, so he said to take it to the local store and have them reflash it to the oem software. Took it by there, and I talked to a guy that works there that rooted a droid and was having problems, told me that I can't go back to the oem sofware after rooting, so they issued me a replacement eris on the spot. Maybe this will take care of the problem, they said if it didn't They could probably swap me for an incredible.

Ok. The new one worked one day. This morning it did the same thing. Called the tech line again. Went through the same procedure again. The phone settings are right. AGAIN. Could it be the network? I can't deal with this any longer. My grandmother isn't doing good. Neither are my grandparents. I need this thing to work incase they need to get ahold of me in the middle of the night.

It probably is the network. The only things that I can think of that you can try to resolve this, if it is a network problem:

- call tech support, explain the problems that you keep seeing. Ask if you can upgrade to a better phone with a better radio. From informal tests that I have done, the Eris's radio is pretty mediocre. I know that the DInc and the Moto Droid series phones are better. Maybe VZW customer support will be willing to let you do this. If you are serious about paying the ETF and switching carriers, that won't hurt to mention - just be ready if they call your bluff. Mentioning your Grandmother's situation may help. I can't believe that they would want to lose a customer.

- This may be cheaper than paying the ETF - buy the Verizon Wireless Network Extender. This uses your broadband internet connection in your house to provide active connections to up to four phones at once. This is actually what I have done - audio dropouts and unrung calls were a pain in the butt. Maybe if you call VZW and explain your problem they will even give you a discount.

- I guess switch to another carrier.

Good luck, I hope that it all works out, whatever choice you make.

I couldn't agree more. Have 2 of these. Nothing but problems and now 2 weeks past 1 year warranty they really have gotten bad. VZW and HTC need to man up and give us some options!

The replacement was doing the same thing, took it back to the store, they've got an incredible on the way should be here friday.

I did notice though, while I was waiting to be helped, side by side with the incredible on display, my eris only had one bar of signal while the incredible had full bars.

So is VZW giving you an Incredible or just "allowing" you to upgrade at some cost? Just wondering what my options might be. Thanks!

Bars really mean nothing - they are just a graphical depiction of the signal strength, and there is no standard that says this many bars = this signal. It would have been better to go into settings->about this phone and find the signal strength, listed in dBM.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the Eris was worse (i.e., more negative.) The eris's radio is junk.
