Record Video in Background

Hello Fellow Androiders,

I have a Droid X and the Car mount, I was wondering if there are any applications that would let me record video on the Droid (as a dash cam) while using google maps as a GPS at the same time?

Thanks For any help!

Thanks For any help!

Fixed! :p

Thanks but no. I'm actually a firefighter and having the licence plates of the assholes who dont get off the road while I'm responding would make things easier.

Aww, that's actually a really good idea. While I think my joke was hysterical (lol), it's good that you mention that extra bit of detail. Anyone who programs apps would see the potential in that idea, and your application of it. Unless there's some hard and fast rule in Android about running the camera in the background, I would think it wouldn't be too hard to code.

You might wanna ask over in the developers forum too. Maybe somebody would be willing to code it and have you test. It could be the next big specialty app.....kinda like how the Palm OS has 10,000 different medical database and dictionary programs. Android could be the home of firefighter apps! :p

Anyway, Merry Christmas!

Mobile hidden camera is actually a spy app. But it lets you run other programs while still taking video. So I suppose it would do the job.
You might need a fast processor though if wanting HD video.

To do what with?
You're a fireman, not a cop.
All a firefighter needs is the license plate to report to the cop.

Then the idiot who didn't get out of the way gets a nice letter in the mail with a ticket in it.
Same for Bus drivers. If someone passes them when they have their lights on and stop sign out, all the police needs is the word of the bus driver.

to tattle..... but not like it would matter.... the only thing he can prove is what car was in the way... good luck proving it was me driving my car, and not my wife, or my brother, or my best friend....

It doesn't matter who's driving. The owner of the car would get the ticket, just like with a red light camera. Also, if it's your house burning down, you'd want to do more to the people who're impeding your rescuers than just "tattle".

I call B.S.

if this were true, why isn't it happening yet? If all you need is the word.... no camera needed so long as they give their word.

I dang sure call BS on a bus driver's word being all they need. Bus drivers are not sworn in employees.... sorry, keep thinking they can, but there is no way. I could ALMOST believe a firefighter/ambulance driver's word to a cop, but no was a school bus driver

Wow. It's already been explained that he doesn't need the camera because he's concerned about anyone believing him. He needs it to record the license plate number, so he knows who to report.

As for what you believe about bus drivers, I guess it's kinda like how they say ignorance of the law is not a defense.

PA Vehicle Code, Chapter 33, Subchapter D,

After every call we fill out our reports and one of the fields on there is for people who impeded our response. Right now I can rarely get anyone because when I'm driving I don't want to try and memorize, much less write down a license plate. With a cam it would just be a matter of scrolling thorough the vid.

so just write it down.... and none of those states are mine.... Personally, I don't trust a bus driver with my kid, and I don't trust the highschool dropouts wanted requirement to be a bus driver, turning in anyone.

so what's the passanger doing? updating his facebook?

Usually the passengers are busy getting their gear on or communicating on the radio. Not to mention you may be going to fast to have time to say, hey, what was that plate number again?

Stop arguing with something that you have no basis in. Go pick a fight with your local bus driver or something.

I'm glad that you find it amusing that while someone is bleeding out from a car accident or their house is burning down, you (or someone like you) is driving down the middle of the lane slowing the response of the rescue services.
Only in America.

Can't wait till you're the one bleeding out, or the owner of the burning house.
Seconds matter. But you wouldn't understand because you have your head shoved so far up your rectum you can't hear the sirens in the background.

Have a nice day sir, I'm done arguing about something that doesn't matter.
This thread was created to see if there was a way to run the camera app in the background, not argue a firefighters word over an idiot that wont move.

I find it amusing that a firetruck driver complaining about traffic is like a teacher complaining about kids, or a first responder complaining about seeing blood all the time....

Look bub, I've been doing this for 16 years, when I'm doing 80 down a back road I dont want to have to worry about assholes like yourself who cant figure out that we only use lights and sirens when we need to move and were en route. This IS life or death, maybe not yours, maybe not this time, but none the less, I usually dont know the exact situation until I'm on scene, so I have to assume that there are people trapped inside.

I, as well as the law, feel that if you can't be bothered to get off the road, you deserve the $250 ticket for obstructing an emergency vehicle.

I realize this thread is really old but it was the first Google result for "background video recording android" so I figured I'd mention that both DailyRoads Voyager and AutoGuard Blackbox are apps that will record video in the background. I haven't used AutoGuard so I can't really comment on how good it is but DailyRoads will automatically start recording once car dock insertion is detected.

Both apps are free.
