Root Recovery freezes

Hi,
I finally got velocity to flash on my ally. everythjing is awesome, I love it. The thing is, when I reboot to do a backup of my rom, it goes to the menu and freezes. volume up or down will not highlight anything. no buttons work. There is a faded android with "!" above him with the recovery menu stuck on reboot now. Have to pull battery and bypass recovery. Why???
Is there a program from market that I can flash roms and recoveries with besides CWMod? Have version 2.2.2 velocity 1.1
 
No clue what's wrong with the recovery, but if you have Velocity 1.1, you have Android 2.2.1.
 
You said it shows the menu?
Have you tried using the arrow keys? That's how you navigate in the recovery included with V1.1
