Can someone explain what the recovery mode is in the boot options of the desire?

i had to use recovery mode to root my desire. it has a few options like wipe phone, install zip files, a few sd card options. but you need to use a push file to be able to go into it

Can it be used to re flash the Rom that came with the phone?

Only if you have a copy of that ROM.

Which you don't as there's no way to back it up yet
