Root [Recovery] Team Win Recovery - TWRP - 2.7.0.0

Root success! Thanks for the guide shabbby. Used odin 1.85 (newer versions don't have pda tab). This is my first Samsung so everything was new to me (coming from rooted lg motion). BTW i picked this up from metro yesterday ($49) and it is on 4.4.2 Build number 49H.T399NUVUANH1 can i use that rom floating around or do I have to wait for a new one (fingers crossed)

I got the same phone and follow instruction. When I click start, this is what I see:

<ID:0/004> Added!!
<ID:0/004> Odin v.3 engine (ID:4)..
<ID:0/004> File analysis..
<ID:0/004> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/004> Initialzation..
<ID:0/004> Get PIT for mapping..
<ID:0/004> Firmware update start..
<ID:0/004> RQT_CLOSE !!
<ID:0/004> RES OK !!

Is that correct? Doesn't seem to be rooted and I definitely do not see TWRP. My recovery still appear to be stock.

Edit: Stupid me, in case anyone did the same thing. Just let the software Odin run longer. I stopped it at the "reset" process, let it process until it say "Passed!". Perfect, now rooted.

I just rooted my Metro phone with this guide today. Thank you Shabby on another job well done. Btw is there a list of the bloatware that can be removed?

How did you guys download these files? On PC or Mobile?

Can't download to mobile. The download button on the Mega site does nothing when clicked. Switched my browser's user agent to mobile and now they're telling me to install an app to access the files.

Can you download straight away from this site or not? Cause I'm certainly not installing any app just to be able to download files. I won't put up with that, regardless if it's a trusted site or not.

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately that's what I had to do. :( I wish there was a better way but maybe there's a reason behind it idk....

Thanks Shabby and guys for your replies, much appreciated. Also, if I may Shabby,.... can you please tell me which version of Odin I should download from your site? There are 3 versions under tools. Or does it matter? Thanks again.

You definitely need root with this phone.Seems like every apk dials home. More so it seems with the newer android version (Kitkat). Or maybe it's just the newer apks. Either way, they are eating up too much data and probably resources.

Also, what's with all the google apk's asking for my location everytime I open their apps? Geez, they just need to know every move you make. They have really gone overboard. Bad enough they keep a history of all your actions, now this constant harassment for your location. Sorry for the rant, I feel better now, thanks. :)

my gf uses this phone (on metro), and hates her preinstalled apps.

a couple questions.

will rooting this way lose her data?
are there any decent aosp roms for this device?
are there any one click root options for this device?

thanks

I'm having trouble with the downloaded files TWRP and Odin from your site Shabby. Neither match the correct size they should be. Needless to say, checksums don't match either.

Tried redownloading a number of times to my phone and can't get complete files even though my phone says download completed.

Been downloading all kinds of files on my new phone without problems. Apks, mp4's, jpeg's, mp3's even the SuperSU zip.

I picked up this phone on Thursday and rooted and installed twrp right away. Over the last few days I've done four different backups as I've added/modified things. Today I looked at the backup folder and found the backups named:
2012-12-31-18-10-18-KOT49H.T399WUVUANHI
2012-12-31-18-10-49-KOT49H.T399WUVUANHI
2012-12-31-18-10-26-KOT49H.T399WUVUANHI
2012-12-31-18-10-43-KOT49H.T399WUVUANHI

The date on my phone is correct. The only date/time adjustment I've seen in twrp is for timezone. Mine had defaulted to central, I changed it to eastern but that wouldn't cause this. I've used twrp on my previous phone and nexus 7's and never saw this before. Any ideas?

Would someone please help me and upload the TWRP.tar on Mediafire or Depositfiles and supply me with the link.

Having trouble with Shabby's and XDA's choice of file hosting sites.

Would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Edit;.... nevermind. Found and was able to download twrp 2.8.1.0

Thank u shabby! I was able to gain root access with your twrp one click root method! I had trouble until I realized I wasnt to plug in usb until after the downloading screen on device, once connected and extracted the correct file..lol..I was trying both that downloaded, I was good to go! My question is..are there any custom roms, like cyanogenmod available for this device? Im exhausted from searching... thank you once again! Im a wanna be noob :)

I just got this phone yesterday and I thought maybe, this time, there wouldn't really be any need to root it. Wrong!! WiFi File Explorer Pro, which I use every day several times a day for podcasts, couldn't read/write to the sd card. That has to be a record. Less than 6 hours from purchase to discovering that I needed to root lol. The platform.xml file has to be edited: http://androidforums.com/threads/fix-sd-card-read-write.886812/

Thank you Shabby! That tap seven times thing for usb debugging tripped me up - who the hell thought that was a good idea at Samsung??

Now, install the Xposed framework and Wanam Xposed and clean up the tiny screen from unnecessary status bar icons and persistent notifications in the notification menu.

That's an Android thing, not just Samsung. Even with many custom AOSP ROMs you still have to turn on Developer Options.

I probably will :)

Oh, I meant tapping seven times on a buried information item to enable it. That's new for KitKat but thanks for pointing out it wasn't Samsung because stupid crap like that gives me a dim opinion of the phone mfg. I bought my last motorola back in 2004 when I found out that some things, like OBEX, were locked down just because of motorola not because of the carrier (metropcs) - I've been a fan of LG ever since. Till getting this phone anyway.

:)

Another noob here but learning a lot for Shabby and others, Thanks for that. I was able to root my Metro Galaxy Light(SGH-T399N) with Kit Kat with Shabby's instructions, TWRP and Odin. One thing I didn't do was make a back up.
What the best way to do this, via my PC with a usb cable or is installing TWRP app on my phone better?
Thanks for the help for dummies like me

IMO, TWRP does an excellent job at backups. If you have an sd card, it's a good idea to back up to that, or I use my Google Drive to store files.

That is what I want. I guess my main questions is, should I or need to install the TWRP app on my phone? My only time I used it was to root and it is installed on my PC. I guess I could use a usb cable but don't know what way is easiest or best.
Thank for the reply
