Root Recovery

Hi all,
My name is Ben and i have a Acer a500 tabelt that is rooted. I have ICS on it. After i rooted it it didnt seem to be rooted but it was because superuser was running. So I went online ti search around and found that a custom ROM named Taboonay 3.0 was a well liked ROM. So I downloaded Acer recovery installer, and ROM manager. I read that if you press install recovery image that it provides you with a list of steps to perform then CWM recovery would be installed. Well i pressed the install recovery image and it said:unfortunately, Acer Recovery Installer has stopped working. It says this every time. I have uninstalled it multiple time but it still does the same thing everytime. Also, when i reboot into recovery mode, a android robot appears with a blue rotating 3D ball in his stomach, then it goes to another android robot that is laying on his back

Can anyone provide me a very specific step by step sequence of how to unroot my device then re-root it again with the Taboonay?

Thanks very much,
Ben

Hello Revolotion15 - welcome to the forums... thanks for joining!

We can certainly try and get you up and running again!! :)

Could you let us know how you rooted your A500? Which method did you follow? Could you let us know if you are running a custom ROM or if it is just stock?

I've just had a quick look... apparently, if you are on ICS, to install a custom recovery or kernel, you must have an unlocked bootloader. I rooted when on HC, so didn't realize this!

Here are the ROM's that say bootloader.
1) CWM rev1.3.4 by thor2002ro(for ICS bootloader)
2) CWM rev1.7 by thor2002ro(for ICS bootloader)
3) TWRP 2.1.1 by Team Win
4) TWRP 2.1.3 by Team Win
That is exactly how it says it in Acer Recovery Installer

Unlocking the bootloader is not the same as rooting... it is a different process. I think that you will have to do that and, as part of the unlock process, you also flash a recovery (from what I understand)... not done with Acer recovery installer :)

As you have had OTA ICS, I think you would be best using Afterota... full instructions on how to use it are on XDA (where I've linked you to). When you first connect your tablet, let it get the values and then save a copy... the info that you get there can save you if anything goes wrong :)

No worries Ben... I've not really used that program, other than to get my device info, but will try to help out if you have any questions :)

Good luck :)

Afterota is a program you run from your computer.

Download it, unzip/extract it and run it - you should then plug your tablet in and it should populate the info about your tablet. You should then be able to save that info, as a text file, to your desktop.

After you have the info, there should be able to use the other tabs to flash the stuff you need :)

okay, now i have it download and got all the info on the program but am now hopelessly lost. I have no idea what to do.

Going to carry on in the thread... will post this in there :)

Have you saved the info to your desktop? If anything should go wrong, then that will help get you out of any holes :)

Having had a bit of a look through the thread on XDA, it appears that you need to put a ROM on your SD card and then use the aterota tool to flash a bootloader and custom recovery. Once you have the custom recovery on your tablet, you would boot in to that and flash the ROM.

So all i need to do is install the ICS bootloader and after that install Flexreaper from the recovery menu?

Yep, install ics bootloader and custom recovery and install the rom

I am so sorry to keep bugging you but;
1) that would include the Taboonay ROM, right?
And that was one of the problems; not going into recovery mode

Don't worry... you're not bugging me :)

You need to download an ICS ROM and put it on your SD card to flash in recovery once you have flashed the bootloader AND recovery.

And that was one of the problems; not going into recovery mode

It sounds like you have not installed a recovery... only rooted. You need to flash an unlocked bootloader (you would also be flashing a custom recovery at the same time). Once you've flashed that, you would enter recovery (power on while holding the volume down key). Once in recovery, you would flash the ROM :)
