your software version is not the issue. it is if you are s-on and unlocked vs s-off.

if you are s-on/unlocked then you will need to use a specialized version of the PC36IMG file that can be found in the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html under the HTCdev method.

actually the guide has instructions on how to install custom recoveries.
