Help red x on battery icon when plugged into laptop

Hello fellow tab users can I please ask for your help?
When I plug my tab2 7.0 into my laptop via usb the battery icon shows a little red x over it and it doesnt charge! Is this normal or are there any settings I have to change to get it to charge from my laptop?
I am new to this tablet thing as ive always been a pc drone!
Can anyone please shed some light on this and help me please?

Probably because the laptop USB port is a standard low-power (500ma) port, and does not supply enough current to charge the tab. If you look at the charger that comes with the tab, its output is 2A (I know it's hard to read the tiny print on it but it's there).

As Fox said, USB charging while using the tab won't supply the battery with enough current for to charge.
With the tab in stand by or shut off might do it.
