Help reducing data usage

Hi - I have an HTC Desire on an Orange business tariff. I'd be grateful on tips to reduce data usage (after receiving a bill that ran into thousands ... thankfully now cancelled by Orange).

I have: downloaded advanced task killer and checked all the boxes (except atk and wi fi hotspot), taken off auto syncing, switched off the internet (and will switch on only when needed), downloaded Stats and have set a transmission limit, which is v low at the moment (just while I get my head round it).

Is there anything else I can do to ensure I keep within my data usage of 500MB. I appreciate this is a sufficient amount anyway, but I was charged for more than 2g in a month ...

Thank you!

Don't use task killers is the no1 thing to start with.
Just don't, they make a mess of something that Android does itself.

If you disable syncing in the settings then that should cover most of it.
Download 3G watchdog will keep an eye on your 3g useage with alarms.

I understand this may be a bit of a sore point, so don't answer this if you'd rather not, but I must confess to being curious - how the hell did you run up a data bill of >

Hi. I have had my desire for 1 month and love it. But I have a similar issue to op.
I was alarmed when I received an alert from 3 UK to say that I had gone over my 1gb data allowance after only 14 days. Luckily only

I leave everything to automatically sync every hour, I don't stream anything on mobile just use the phone for emails and very brief browsing.
On rare occasions I have used maps and navigate.
I also generally use a widget or the app for facebook so I expect that's less data usage than loading the facebook mobile site
My data usage is tiny every day and I don't get anywhere near my 500mb fair use in a month.
When I'm on wifi at home then I go crazy ;)

So it is possible to have a small data usage without having to manually turn stuff on and off.
