Reinstalling apps from google (market)

Hawker

Android Expert
I've been dabbling with 1 or 2 roms lately, and I always do a factory reset etc.
So when I boot up for the first time, it then gives the choice to sync into my google account, downloading apps etc.

The apps that it seems to bring back are not all of my most recently installed apps. It brings back many apps that I installed and uninstalled ages ago. I would have thought whatever your current list of apps is on the Market would be the apps it attempts to re-install.

Does anyone know how the list of apps it brings down on first boot is derived?
Perhaps there is an option somewhere to flag an app that is required on rebuilds?

I've always chosen yes to sync with google on first run as i thought perhaps its easier that way with regards to syncing your contacts+calendar as well, but would I be better off saying no, and install titanium again then restoring from this. I suppose i would then have to manually set up my google contacts+calendar details separately?

You're not alone with that hawker. I gave up bothering to reinstall apps via the market. So I go the titanium method. The strange thing is titanium never shows up on the app list so I always have to search for that first.

I think titanium is really the better way of doing it anyway (certainty if you have the pro version anyway). It's far quicker to restore apps that way than it is to redownload them all, even via WiFi.

which batch/option is best to use - I did a full wipe and tried to restore all my apps, and got a whole load of old ones that I used to have but got rid of weeks ago???

you can select which ones you want syd.
if you uninstall apps after a backup has been taken, they will still be in titanium for you to restore at a later date. if you dont want them, unselect them prior to the install.
you can also delete them from the backup itself if required.

so do you go through your app list and individually restore what you want, or do you do a batch restore??

when i did a batch restore I didnt get any options to include/exclude apps, it seemed to restore everything I've ever had on my phone since I started using titanium. that's why I think I am picking the wroing batch option.

go into titanium
click backup/restore
menu>batch
scroll down to the restore section and click on the run button next to the relevant backup

you will see check-boxes next to all the apps in the backup
untick/tick as you see fit then click "run the batch operation" (all will be ticked by default)

aaah, of course, they were all the boxes below the long "run batch" button at the top - the boxes I ignored!!!!

can I claim the idiot of the week prize now please.

Another way of doing it, if you're in the habit of keeping lots of backups of apps you don't want to reinstall, is to temporarily switch your titanium backup folder to a new directory before backing up. Then when you hit the batch option to restore all, on the new rom, you don't have to go through the (potentially) massive list.

Google Backup restores all your paid apps, period. It's an all-or-nothing solution, and doesn't include free apps as they're not tied to your Market account.

Re Titanium.... another solution is to use the Label function to group your currently-installed apps. I do something similar with a label "Essentials" which contains all my must-have apps. Others I restore depending on the ROM in use or how I feel at the time.

Ah, that's a much better way of doing it :)

If you go into your market account, you will see most (if not all) of your free apps.

After I've done a factory reset and run the handset for the first time, it downloads a random selection of my previously installed free apps

It never did for me, so I stopped even trying. It must just be me it hates.

Do you have either option enabled under Settings >> Privacy for 'Backup my data' and 'Automatic restore'? Those seem to determine if it redownloads your apps or not.

That is weird then Slug.
I've done this about 5 or 6 times now, and its downloaded a "random" selection of approx 30 free apps each time for me.
