Just saw this posted this morning, it seems now that it is confirmed that the Xoom price will be $799 and there will need to be a minimum $20 1 Month Data plan attached at the time of purchase.

I can confirm as a best buy mobile employee that it will be released on the 24th, and we will receive them on the 20th. unfortunatly I can also confirm the 35 dollar activation required to walk out with the device is true. But you can cancel it right away if you like. I also confirmed this is a verizon policy, not a best buy one. Any questions, ask away, I think I get more excited about it every day!
I can also confirm the preorder date of the 17th. Fifty dollar deposit.

Can I buy it without buying data plan? i.e. Can't i just put a verizon sim in it to activate wifi. This is an off contract price; right? Only if I want to activate wifi will i have to get data and i can do that when and how I please. Or am i missing something?

Yes and no. I'm sure myself as well as my coworkers will do a good job of spreading the word. Starting the 16th there will be information on bestbuy.com/xoom, as well as the main page.
Basically anyone going into a Best Buy should know about it.
Oh, by the way, our Motorola rep came in earlier this week and showed the Xoom and Atrix, and I must say, the Xoom is amazing. Feels good, sturdy, super quick, and just looks beautiful. A coworker, who owns an Ipad, was in awe and automagically peaked interest in it.

I'm sure there is a way around it, sure, but Verizon has a policy in place that one can't leave the store without being activated. This is not a Best Buy thing, it's a Verizon policy. Like I said though, this is really easy to fix, just have them do the activation, then call and cancel. It's not something new, they did the exact same thing with the tab.
If you cancel within 3 days, nothing is billed, except pro-rated data charges.

So if we buy it and cancel the service within three days we do not get charged for the activation fee or the month of data?
Have they stated whether the Xoom will be available for preorder online? I doubt I will be able to get to the store on the 17.

i have never dealt with verizon. i have been on sprint for nearly 12 years and before that i was on bellsouth mobility, so pardon my ignorance on verizon..
so you have to purchase a data plan to "unlock" wifi. im thick in the head.. is there some code that verizon sends to the tablet in form of an OTA to remove the flag and open up wifi? i mean its hardware how can paying a fee release the hardware antenna that has nothing to do with 3G?
the question has to be super easy since no one else has mentioned it so ok im the only thick head in the class...

Yes, basically the tablet is stuck at the activation screen and there isn't a way to get past it without the ota activation. And even if there is, unfortunatly we can't sell it without the customer signing up for the data plan. Its just like the tab. With the tab though, sprint and att would charge you 50 dollars more to skip that part, so no activation as neeeded.

Yep! That's exactly it. Even if you cancel the service you'll still be able to do wifi, it just takes that first activation to "unlock" it.

Aookay, I don't doubt your information, but that almost seems too good to be true.
So if I go and buy a Xoom and call VZW and cancel the service within 3 days I dont have to pay for activation or a months worth of data on my bill?

Correct. Unless you wait two days then they will pro-rate the data charges. I know this because that's what some people would do with the Galaxy, and all the training materials have referred to it as the same setup.
There is no contract you are signing, so there isn't a way for them to deny you terminating that service.
Though, whats nice about the activation charge (Can't believe I typed those words) is that it allows you to turn off and on the data whenever you want and you never have to pay that fee again.
Though, it would be better if it was like the iPad, and you didn't have to pay the fee at all =/ (but the data plans are better on verizon)
Just to follow up with the data plan. I spoke to a VZ rep about this required data thing. I was told you can negotiate these fees. So I plan to say if you want me spend 800+ dollars I'm not paying activation fee or data fee, put it on my plan and cancel it right after, and waive the fees. I was told it's as simple them checking two boxes to waive fees on a purchase.
all of this talk about best buy and the 24th, has anyone heard if verizon will be selling it in their stores on the 24th as well?
not a huge fan of the best buy pre-order policies and the best buy near me don't seem to focus on training or services very much where as the verizon store closest to me rocks, lots of good employees work there.
the other best buy near me is a pain to drive to but that store's employees are really good just don't want to drive it.
