Release date ? (BBY Xoom page active as of 2/20)

Ok, so I went into my local Best Buy and after waiting for about 30 minutes for someone to help me I spoke to a BB Mobile employee and I am sure our resident BB Mobile employee, Aookay, could back this up.

He said and showed me that the Xoom is in their weekly (next week) Tech flyer for $799. They have only ONE sku number for it and that is the 3G + Wifi version. They will be preordering on Sunday the 20th and will give you a gift card for the amount you put down on it so basically you can take the gift card and spend it on what ever but they are charging you instore credit to reserve your Xoom. The 24th is supposed to be the pick up date.

Lastly, he had not heard anything regarding a WiFi only version, i.e. the single sku for the 3G/WiFi version. So, unless Moto wants to surprise us ALL, there will not be a preorder for the WiFi only version. And as far as this guy was concerned, there wasn't even a WiFi only version set to debut any time in the near future.

I feel like a cheese addicted rat in a maze but everytime I get close to that golden morsle, they move it to a different part of the maze! JUST GIVE ME MY CHEESE ALREADY, DAMNIT!!!!!

Yep, this is all true. We have one SKU right now, price is 799 (wish it was lower =/) and it will be able to be preordered on sunday. I'll be there first thing for sure, I am so excited for this Xoom!

so i have not pre ordered b4 at bby, so i got in, give them some cash, they give me a gift card and put my name on a list.

on release day, i walk in, state my name, hand my gift card that will go towards the cost of the unit... is that how it works?

aaokay, do you know when your store will get these tabs in? do you guys post up armed guards until release? lol how do you normally handle pre orders of high profile gadgets such as this? i bet someone will take one out snap a photo or video and post it up on the web (like they did the evo.. :D)

This was the old way for pre-ordering. What I've read (from a BB employee post on either this board or XDA) was that the system has been updated and preorders will be done electronically in store. The old way wasn't very efficient or organized. I think you may get a receipt only now, no more gift card/list deal.

According to the BB employee I spoke with today, you will get a BB gift card for what ever amount you put down for Preorder and they register your name. After that you can use the Gift card for what ever you want in store, however you will still have to pay the $799 + tax on the 24th, so it is smart to just save the gift card and use that towards your shiny new xoom!

Interesting, so maybe only the registration is handled electronically now then. When I pre-ordered the HTC Hero way back, the BB employees had a preorder form that had to be filled out by hand. It was a nightmare, they couldnt find the forms initially, then when i filled it out and gave them my money in exchange for the gift card they threw my form into a pile of other papers...I was sure they were going to lose it. Hopefully the paper form is what the other BB employee was referring to.

One would think that they could just register your info in the computer and that would log the amount of preorders each store had for shipping. I mean common sense would dictate that would be the easiest way...right?

Yep, just head over to the mobile department, say I'd like to preorder one of those mighty fine Xooms, we scan some stuff, and everything is done through the computers. No more written lists and less chance of mistakes.

I expect them on tuesday to be there, and we will have robo guards and dogs that shoot bees from their mouths.

I don't imagine it will be toooo crazy a presale, the ipad launch day wasn't even that crazy. I would love to be proven wrong though!

Yeah, it's completely different now, no more piles. I'm right there with you though, that was not fun times.

BB has told me in the past that just because you pre-order doesn't mean you will be one of the ones to get the item. Can you tell me how that works? i.e. if I am the first one to pre-order am I guaranteed a xoom from that store?

I can't believe that BBY is giving pre-orders and VZW is not. When I bought my Dinc it was a pre-order and it was on my doorstep on launch day before noon.

Yeah a VZW pre-order would be nice. Does BB have an online pre-order? I assume no, I hate going to a store for a pre-order. Especially when a BB really isn't close to me.

Why do you need to preorder so badly?

Rest assured, this won't sell out.

i hope not until i can get to the store. i think the fear comes not from the demand per-se but the from the supply. if each best buy and verizon store only gets 5 or 10 of them then there is a real chance of not getting one until the second shipment which is who knows when. now if best buy was getting 100 of them or something per store i don't think any would worry but i haven't heard anywhere the size of the shipments going to the average store.

the droid incredible was like that. i don't think the demand was huge the supply wasn't that great and led to alot of people waiting months (two people i work with waited 6 weeks to get theirs, i had to go to 3 different verizon stores on launch day to find one). Never thought i would ever have to pre-order a phone but that whole experience showed me to consider it in the future.

Some of you know me from the Thunderbolt forums. Just popped in to drop the knowledge I've found about the Xoom.

Preorders will begin Sunday, 2-20, with a release date of 2-24(Thursday)

That's all.

Correct, and as much as we would love to give everyone a Xoom as there are preorders, sometimes they don't send enough initially to fufill our preorders. This happened with the Droid X last year.

If you are the first person to preorder, yes you will. After the 5th preorder though...not quite sure.

Convenience. I'm a teacher and I don't get home most days until between 4 and 5. If I pre-order one and have it delivered to my school, as the FedEx Truck passes my school he delivers it to my building OR if they deliver it to my home I have it as I walk in the door. Much more convenient than stopping by VZW or BBY. Nothing more sinister than that.

So did it sound to you as though you'd have to do the pre-order in person, or might there be an option to complete the preorder online (doing in-store pickup at the location of your choosing, of course)??

i really wish we could get someone from verizon on this forum....i wonder if they will have them in stock on the 24th as well
