My dad had his upgrade date bumped up two weeks in December. It's possible I guess it depends on who you talk to. Although if you can't it's not the end of the world. I'm eligible for an upgrade now but I won't get the phone day 1. I want to see reviews and see what the status of rooting the phone will be before I jump in.

I'm a bit worried on this front as well; Moto has been infamous in the past year for being the worst manufacturer as far as locking the bootloader hard, combine that with AT&T's reputation for gimping Android phones and it makes me wonder.
I am hoping however that since this appears to be the biggest story in phones this CES that we'll see some very early reviews from major editorials as well as solid support from the modding community. Just the fact that this bad boy has 1GB RAM and (presumably) built in USB host would make it very attractive to rooting. Just imagine hacking in and compiling other ARM compatible linux software into that webtop, that could be epic!

I am not due for an upgrade till feb something..
I upgraded in december to a flight II and brought it back because it gets worse battery life than most smartphone users seem to get.
The downside is when we returned it.. it set my upgrade back some time in feb...
But, If at&t ask.. we will just said we didn't want the phone we had and couldn't afford a better upgrade at that time..

Not trying to be a buzz kill.
But, getting reviews from editorials is not going to be any indicator of how easy it is to root.
I see some major reasons motorola would want to keep it locked..

I wasn't trying to suggest that editorials will be able to comment on the ease of rooting, only on getting early reviews on the quality of the device in general. I am suggesting that this is one of the biggest phones coming out in the near future which would hopefully spur the exploration of "rootability" in rather short order. In my estimation the speed of rooting correlates to the capabilities of the device because the most powerful phones tend to attract that community. (not counting the nexus series, which is unique in the space) Not a strong enough group cared about the Droid X or Droid 2, so their roots took a fair amount of time and never gathered bigtime chef support.
I am hoping that this phone turns out to be as powerful and high quality as it looks in previews, therefore drawing more people to the fight against the bootloader. Time will tell if Moto has come up with any grand new scheme on locking people out, they do seem to spend a fair amount of resources to that end, unfortunately.

Its one of those issues like DRM... they come out with DRM.. people just see it as a challenge to crack it.
With that said.. I wouldn't be surprised if it took a while to crack his one if they put enough effort into locking it.
It would be funny if it came with an unlocked bootloader.
However, I am wondering what the odds are of a bootloader being u nlocked.. even if motorola wanted to ship it with an unlocked bootloader, I don't see at&t agreeing to that.
Then it poses the question if they are going to lock it.. why not go all the way?
It took a month or so to crack assassins creed.. So.. I imagine if moto really put up a good fight.. it could take a month or two for this phone as well.
With all that said.. I wonder if my teacher next semester would give me extra credit for cracking it

You should be able to get a cheaper early upgrade price right? I know each year when I bought the new iPhone the version with smaller storage was $399 for an early upgrade.

I hope the off contract price won't be too bad, even though I am due for an upgrade I rather not be locked into a contract with Att, as my current status is with my N1.

Well I can't wait for this phone to be released I am so ready to ditch my BB Torch. In fact I am going to be listing it on Ebay ASAP so I can be ready when it is. I am so disappointed with the torch and can't wait to get my hands on the Atrix so I hope it is released this month. Until then I will go back to using my BB 9700. I will have to buy it off contract but it will be so worth it!

They can't price it out if the game so 300+ is wrong. Even though it has a dual core its has to be in the same range as other high ends
I personally think it will be $300 on contract, hope I am wrong.
I do hope you are right, but there is too much emphasis on its docking capabilities and some Androids (whatever that one was on Sprint) has been priced higher.
The other thing is if it is priced the same as Captivate and other newer SmartPhones, they would not sell.

Pretty big incentive to sell it for more

I can't see "16GB" being much of a price factor for the Atrix, given that the Nokia N900 hit the street with 32GB native storage (non-flash card), and a mid-$500 price tag, "back in '09".
I just hope the laptop dock is under $200, given the costs of the Celio Redflys.

So.. the general assumption is because most other 16 gig phones are 200$ the tegra 2 will be as well..
Which I think may be stretching it.. since it is dual core too..
I mean there could be major problems with apple.. if a phone that is clearly superior hardware is cheaper and apple doesn't let at&t lower the price..
and unlike hummingbird its going to be a no contest issue.. iphone 4 is 300$ and has one core. Its not going to take some tech geek to say "OMG TWO CORES VS APPLE'S ONE!"

If apple doesn't let at&t drop price.. that means at&t is in an interesting position for pricing..

Well, the other phones prices would be dropped. The Infuse is pretty much a Captivate replacement. $199 will probably be the price for the three phones with different selling points for each: dual-core, HTC sense with a 4.3" screen, and a 4.5" and tremendously thin phone. This is what the consumer will see when buying a phone. This is plenty of difference. It would be easy fornthem all to be priced the same and sell well as each have different markets.
Regarding the posts to an early upgrade, I unfortunately do not have the primary line (some how AT&T changed Otto a different number) but the bill is always at least $250 a month and paid via bill pay so those are pluses.

I am basing pricing off of the other high end android phones, not the iPhone. Pricing will be based off of competitors Android offerings and not the iPhone or Windows Phone 7. Again, between then new phones they announced, each has a different selling point and is targeted towards it's own consumer base. You have to remember that the people on forums likenthese are not the average consumer at all.

Part of why I'm kinda losing interest in this phone is because, even if everything works out with it just fine..
its really a bit much just for a phone..
If your going to use it for the docking, gaming and what not.. great. If not.. then I think your right.
The HTC and Samsung phone do have a market..
Not everyone is interested in specs alone.. and outside of people who just want the best hardware.. or to use the device for docking..
The phone itself is really a bit overkill for those of us just looking for a good phone.
